Disgraced Sandy Berger joins Hillary Clinton campaign

Sandy Berger, who stole highly classified terrorism documents from the National Archives, destroyed them and lied to investigators, is now an adviser to presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Berger, who was fired from John Kerry´s presidential campaign when the scandal broke in 2004, has assumed a similar role in Clinton´s campaign, even though his security clearance has been suspended until September 2008. This is raising eyebrows even among Clinton´s admirers.

“It shows poor judgment and a lack of regard for Berger´s serious misdeeds,” said law professor Jonathan Adler of Case Western Reserve University, who nonetheless called Clinton “by far the most impressive candidate in the Democratic field.”

Adler told The Examiner that it is “simply incomprehensible to me that a serious contender for the presidency would rely upon him as a key foreign policy advisor.”

He added: “If Senator Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee, at some point she will begin to receive national security briefings that will include sensitive information. At such a point, continuing to keep Berger on board as a key advisor, where he might have access to sensitive material, would be beyond incomprehensible.”

The Clinton campaign declined to comment.

Berger has admitted stealing documents from the National Archives in advance of the 9/11 Commission hearings in 2003. The documents, written by White House counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, were a “tough review” of the Clinton administration´s shortcomings in dealing with terrorism, Clarke´s lawyer told the Washington Post.

On several occasions, Berger stuffed highly classified documents into his pants and socks before spiriting them out of the Archives building in Washington, according to investigators. On one occasion, upon reaching the street, he hid documents under a construction trailer after checking the windows of the Archives and Justice Department buildings to make sure he was not being watched.

Berger came back later and retrieved the documents, taking them home and cutting them up with scissors. Two days later, he was informed by Archive employees that his removal of documents had been detected.

“Berger panicked because he realized he was caught,” said a report by the National Archives inspector general, which also recounted his initial reaction. “Berger lied.”

Berger also lied to the public, telling reporters he made an “honest mistake” by “inadvertently” taking the documents, which he blamed on his own “sloppiness.” Bill Clinton vouched for the explanation for Berger, who served as his national security adviser.

Berger later conceded: “I was giving a benign explanation for what was not benign.”

The Justice Department initially said Berger stole only copies of classified documents and not originals. But the House Government Reform Committee later revealed that an unsupervised Berger had been given access to classified files of original, uncopied, uninventoried documents on terrorism. Several Archives officials acknowledged that Berger could have stolen any number of items and they “would never know what, if any, original documents were missing.”

At his sentencing in September 2005, Berger was fined $50,000, placed on probation for two years and stripped of his security clearance for three years.

And all we hear is crickets from the MSM. If a Republican put such an idiot on his team all hell would break loose.

I believe (or want too) that conservatives are doing just that. Timing is IMHO a key as to when to release such as we live in a society that is infested with a short attention span these days. A sort of fast food style of get our news in 3 minutes or less and go on our way per se.

Spend our nickles wisely and timely.

I heard on Fox he isn’t supposed to be able to view security documents until 2008 but if she gets nomination she will have access to sec. documents so how will that work with the burgler on staff?

Disgraced? Unfortunately, no. Not in the eyes of people who shape so much public opinion. Burglar is a Xlinton stooge so he gets a pass.

We of course rightly excoriate Burglar - but this will amount to nothing in national media. More is the pity.

This is so unbelievable!!! This is the first that I had heard that these documents were originals that Berger had stolen, and that there are no copies. So there is no way to determine what he had stolen and the damage that was done to our National Security? Unbelievable. Why was he given a slap on the wrist sentence?’

I knew some of the documents he hid on his body, hid at the construction site and then later retrieved and destroyed were indeed original, uncopied documents no doubt containing marginal notes that would harm clinton.

I just returned from a visit with a spectacular friend who is a retired Brig. General. Both he and I held Top Secret Clearances and the thought of Berger getting his clearance back after what he did makes us absolutely sick !

Please do not forget......the MSM as well as other organizations are working overtime to discredit, marginalize those whom are not the chosen ones

Guiliani CFR
Romney CFR
McCain CFR
Thompson CFR

The MSM does not want you to focus on more conservative candidates such as Hunter.

For instance, the last debate did not include the NON-CFR candidates....why?

It was not covered by the major networks....why?

These candidates have a largely more conservative message, the MSM is liberal or at best, moderate liberal.

“When she becomes the official candidate she will be allowed to see those documents, but Berger can not.”

Oh thats right, i forgot. It must be insisted that Berger not see any of them.....now, of course, he can STEAL them and destroy them, and maybe cut them up in little paper dolls holding hands, or line his cockatils cage with them, or use them as a shim under a construction trailer chassie, but, by Crom, he cannot SEE them.

It was the Bush administration that gave a pass to Berger. Bush even promoted Noel Hillman, a man highly recommended by Dem. senators Menendez and Lautenberg. Incidentally Hillman also had the backing of Michael Chertoff.

Wow.... when I clicked to respond I got a ‘temporary not available’.

Now... these FBI files works only IF there is some THREAT.. would then equate to BLACKMAIL... so how long will these of a qualified liberal ‘sin’ succumb to this threat???

That temporarily available is a glitch here on FR, I think.
It happened to me last night, too.

As to how long will people succumb to the threat of
exposition of darkly-held, raw FBI file info??

How long till the next millenium?

“If the Pubbies can’t make hay with Berger’s appointment, they deserve to lose”

I agree, but unfortunately the the amount of hay bales in the barn that the the Pubbies have managed to pile up so far wouldn’t feed one small cow for a day.

Thus proving... Birds of a feather flock together... criminals accept other criminals... Clinton who stole the White House silver accepts Berger who stole documents... and anyone who’s still backing Clinton is a shameless sycophant !!!

Um - too many spooky historical parallels for my liking. A lot of despots of history got their boost to the top this way. A lot of people don't stop to think that characters like Lenin and Hitler didn't just jump up one day and go "I'm the boss now, yup!" - it took a lot of legwork and money by like-minded people who no doubt saw a way to fortune and power of their own in sponsoring those sort of creeps - a "one hand washes the other" sort of scenario, that didn't necessarily always work out to the dismay of some supporters who may have gotten more than they bargained for in the end.

My husband believes he will sabotage her, too. In my gut I kind of think the same thing. He’s all about Bill and couldn’t stand the thought of her “possibly” having a better legacy.
