Puzzling Racial Gap
The Hartford Courant ^ | Oct 7 2007 | Roger Frahm

BLOOMFIELD - A generation ago, Bloomfield was heralded as the all-American community. Blacks and whites lived side by side, chasing the American dream of middle-class stability without regard to skin color. There were trimmed lawns and good schools.

Now, Bloomfield operates one of the most racially segregated school systems in the state. Minority students, mainly black children, account for 95 percent of public school enrollment.

And when results were released recently on the state's annual 10th-grade achievement test, this quiet, middle-class suburb found itself confronting a question more often associated with the nation's poorest urban school systems:

Thanks. I’d imagine it being like Willingboro (formerly Levittown), NJ in terms of the sociocultural environment and racial balance.

You’ll notice, of course, that the race hustlers NEVER analyze the racial gap in athletics.

I used t know Hartford well. Not in years though. It has been years since the days when you didn’t make sure your car doors were locked, and you didn’t need to stop anywhere just go right through. Hartford has some beautiful very old architecture and museums. The Wadsworth is one of them.

New Britain, Newington, Bloomfield, Bristol, Wallingford, and perhaps more town, run right up to Hartford lines, it is like one hug urban sprawl! You think you are still in Hartford, and the only indication of a town change is a street sign. Way Too busy for me!!

It is probably more rural. There are still a few farms, and houses tend to be on an acre or so. The racial balance by household is probably 50/50.

“So there you go. Its the white people’s fault.”

I know you meant that as sarcasm, but it really is the clinging to victim hood mindset, so they don’t have to be accountable, or so they think. I refer of course ONLY to those who DO cling to it.

I believe it goes deeper than anyone wants to admit. Look at the origin countries and look at their education. Look at what they have contributed to the world. Not much. Mexico doesn’t do a thing for the world because they can’t. Africa doesn’t contribute anything to the world because they can’t. Why do we expect them to do any better just because they live in the US? I know this is going to sound like the old deep south but I don’t believe that they can learn as the whites do, nor do they have the desire to learn. Why should they, the world takes care of them. The one problem we are facing is that they are multiplying to the extent that we will reach a point that we can’t take care of them all. Then what. Again, I honestly believe the problem is that we don’t or won’t admit what the real problem is.

No matter how fancy the sawmill, one can't mill good lumber from bad timber.

Funny you never see phony liberal bureaucrats move into “racially diverse areas”. They live in trendy lily white communities and send their kids to private schools, while preaching their liberal philosophies to the rest of us.

1. Mexicans are partially European racially, and the mestizo population is thoroughly westernized.

2. Don't know about where you live, but here in NJ, it aint the white kids winning Westinghouse prizes. The top school district in the entire state is 45% Asian Indian/Korean/Chinese (West Windsor).

True.
But we were not constrained as children by supposed professionals and adults in positions of power, who wrote rules regarding “zero tolerance” for verbal and physical assault, but only ever enforce those rules to “equally” punish the victims of such assaults, but not the actual assailants.

White flight?
LOL!
White, black, red, brown, yellow or purple...any parent with the financial or social means to flee the public school system does so.
If I had the means, I would also flee...
That “test scores” are going down everywhere is as much to be expected as when eventually, life expectancy rates will start falling again, under liberal/socialist rules.

There was only one high school in our town and my son had several black friends. The black friends were constantly heckled for having white friends. If they were smart and studied, they were accused of trying to be “white”.

As long as black kids consider being educated as a stigma, you’re not going to have students and schools that succeed.

On a 2005 nationwide reading test, the gap between black and white high school seniors whose parents were college graduates actually was larger than the gap between blacks and whites whose parents had not finished high school.

Why?

The gap is not the important statistic!

THE GAP IS NOT THE IMPORTANT FREEPIN' STATISTIC!!!

Even if you take on faith that the test score measures something important, what is important is the score of the students, not the gap between one group and another. Perhaps the white students who were children of college graduated did much better than white students who were children of parents who did not finish high school, while minority students whose parents finished college fared better, but not quite so well. Thus a larger gap.

But the students did better, so isn't that a good thing?

But the Liberal concentrates on the gap, and the gap becomes the most important thing.

Where, there are two ways to close a gap. Eventually the Liberal gets tired of doing the heavy lifting to bring up the lowest, and realized that it is much easier to close the gap by punishing the achiever. So they will merrily do so, and break their arms patting themselves on the back because the system is now more "fair".

Meanwhile, every parent with the ability to do so pulls their kids the heck out of the public school system. Surprise, suprise...

Political correctness doesn’t allow the real questions of how this could happen to be spoken, much less answered.

What bothers me is these kids live in middle class suburbia, this is not the “Hood” there are no housing projects, no slums. They spend over 10,000 per student a year to educate them. They could be sent to private Catholic schools for half of that cost. But if there is no desire to become educated it doesn't’t matter how much money is thrown at the problem, it is just an exercise in futility.i

Too much “Fiddy Cent” and not enough reading. Blacks today would rather whine about the injustice of “da man” than put forth any effort learning the basics that blacks 30 years ago knew by the time they graduated from high school. Entitlement kills initiative.

The problem ain’t racial. It’s liberalism.

Sad so few on this board get that.

Pedro Noguera, a professor of education at New York University...Although family incomes may be similar, some families do not have the advantages or stability that comes with inherited wealth or several generations of college education, he said.

This is BS! My family has been in America for over 350 years, yet we have had no inherited wealth or a family member that had a college education until my Father finished school in 1941.

Just poor white farmers and workers trying to get ahead.
