Bush: All religions pray to 'same God'

President George Bush has repeated his belief all religions, "whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God" – an assertion that caused outrage among evangelical leaders when he said it in November 2003.

Bush made the statement Friday in an interview with Al Arabiya reporter Elie Nakouzi.

Al Arabiya is Al Jazeerah's top competitor in the Mideast.

As the president and Nakouzi walked from the Oval Office to the Map Room in the White House residence, Nazouki asked, "But I want to tell you – and I hope this doesn't bother you at all – that in the Islamic world they think that President Bush is an enemy of Islam – that he wants to destroy their religion, what they believe in. Is that in any way true, Mr. President?"

"No, it's not," said Bush. "I've heard that, and it just shows [sic] to show a couple of things: One, that the radicals have done a good job of propagandizing. In other words, they've spread the word that this really isn't peaceful people versus radical people or terrorists, this is really about the America not liking Islam.

"Well, first of all, I believe in an Almighty God, and I believe that all the world, whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God. That's what I believe. I believe that Islam is a great religion that preaches peace. And I believe people who murder the innocent to achieve political objectives aren't religious people, whether they be a Christian who does that – we had a person blow up our – blow up a federal building in Oklahoma City who professed to be a Christian, but that's not a Christian act to kill innocent people.

"Indeed he is! Just ask the few remaining Christians in the Middle East and North Africa."

He is a secular globalist, like his dear old dad.
I don't believe we will ever again see anything but a secular globalist in the White House.
You couldn't get a strong pro-American Christian elected.
Reagan was the last.
There will be no more.
You can flame away, but it's the truth.

SO a just God completely ignores the prayers of a billion people in the world because their understanding of just who and what he is, is completely messed up?

But doesn't God honor people's free will? Doesn't he let people experience the consequences of their mistakes? If God answered their prayers, they would have no incentive to abandon their "completely messed up" understanding of God. God ignores their prayers out of respect for their freedom and for their own good, as correction. Furthermore, God mostly ignores prayers anyway, so they're really no worse off than the rest of us. Thankfully God has equipped us all to make our way in this world without needing a lot of supernatural intervention. At the end of the day, we all get by.

I think you meant to post that on the other Bush-bashing morning thread.

Well, I know you have a pic of Bush over your bed, but.... I DID intend it for this thread. It show a pattern that was hidden from us: Bush's staggering ignorance of the true base of the conservative party and its desires.

‘.. all religions, “whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God” – “

Mr. President, how many people did Jesus Christ kill and rape during his time on earth? How many times did Jesus Christ CONTRADICT himself or the Old Testament? Jesus dies for all men and Mohammad kills all men who will not kneel to his version of the truth and YOU think these serve the same God?

BTW, if this IS a bush bashing thread why do you think it is?

Islam is not a religion in the accepted sense of the word. It is a geopolitical ideology posing as a religion in order to be covered by consitutional protections here in the US while it seeks to undermine and defeat us.

uumm, I'm not going to say anything that will get me zotted but...

I think President Bush is misinformed.

This is a kind of a "the Earth is flat" statement. And it does, in a Liberal sense, "equate". That is, all religions are equal, all people are equal, all countries and cultures are equal, everything everywhere is equal. All religions are equal. It is all about 'equality' and moral equivilancy.

GW has flipped. In some areas he is more of a classic 'Liberal' than Hillary or Pelosi.

I ignore the statement; it’s true in the very broadest sense, in that there is only one God, and that people think they’re praying to Him. As an evangelical Lutheran, I know there is only one way to salvation. However, we elected Bush as President, not Pastor-in-Chief.
Very well said, and very very true.

And as Commander-in-Chief he is also Diplomat-in-Chief, since diplomacy is fundamentally an aspect of national defense, every bit as important as building tanks and stealth aircraft.

Diplomacy is part of deciding which battles to fight and when to fight them.

I know that there are some people here in FR who feel we should take on all 1.2 billion muzzies right now, but no responsible CIC would see it that way and Bush is right to say the things he says about the muzzies, even if some of them are patently untrue, such as Islam being a Religion of Peace.

WE are free to openly scoff at the concept of "Islam is a Religion of Peace". Our CIC is not.

It also shows his lack of political savvy. He puts more emphasis in PR towards muslims countries than he gave to talking and selling the war to Americans. Same can be said for the economy.

Who is baal? Who is molech? Oh that’s right, they are a couple of the ‘other’ gods that Yahweh warned us NOT to follow. But, I suppose Yahweh could be wrong about there being other gods.

Bush is right. There is only one God.
You are right. By definition.

Unless you're an animist, or an ancient Roman or Greek. (Or perhaps a Hindu. Do they believe in multiple gods or just multiple demigods?)

Please Understand Bush labors under a dual load— #1 he was
raised a Methodist(not necessarily a born again Christian kind of Bible believing theology) #2 he is a politician( who believes in the secular reilgion of State over religion) True Islam is a bloody religion of conquest and
forced submission it is a bloody cult. But to an American
President that is a moot point to be rejected in favor of
diplomatic Kissey Face— now pass the bowl around I gotta puke.

You are mistaken. Christians believe there is only one God.

If there is only one God, then non Christians praying to god are praying to the Christian God.

The theology and dogma are different, but there is but one God. On that point there is agreement.

It is however, an islamic act. Even if the Oklahoma city bomber was "Christian" that's one "Christian bombing" against thousands of Islamic bombings, shooting, shelling, and rocketing.

What branch was he from? Can't say that I heard much about that. Did he quote from the Bible before hand? I have a feeling his religion wasn't his driving force!

Apparently you are just as out of touch as Bush. Most of these people, including myself, voted for this idiot. The lesser of two evils. We are completely disgusted with his continous lack of respect for U.S. soveriegnty, his conservative base and U.S. citizenship. And, now you can add his lack of respect for Christianity - the very people that elected him. Or, do you believe he was elected by atheists who defected from the left?

The Jewish god is a god of revenge. My God is a god of foregiveness and being non judgemental.

Oh God! Are you a Christian?

He could have simply said, "No".
