Some Muslim medical students are refusing to attend lectures or answer exam questions on alcohol-related or sexually transmitted diseases because they claim it offends their religious beliefs.
Some trainee doctors say learning to treat the diseases conflicts with their faith, which states that Muslims should not drink alcohol and rejects sexual promiscuity.
A small number of Muslim medical students have even refused to treat patients of the opposite sex. One male student was prepared to fail his final exams rather than carry out a basic examination of a female patient.
The religious objections by students have been confirmed by the British Medical Association (BMA) and General Medical Council (GMC), which both stressed that they did not approve of such actions.
It will intensify the debate sparked last week by the disclosure that Sainsburys is permitting Muslim checkout operators to refuse to handle customers alcohol purchases on religious grounds. It means other members of staff have to be called over to scan in wine and beer for them at the till.
Critics, including many Islamic scholars, see the concessions as a step too far, and say Muslims are reneging on their professional responsibilities.
This weekend, however, it emerged that Sainsburys is also allowing its Muslim pharmacists to refuse to sell the morning-after pill to customers. At a Sainsburys store in Nottingham, a pharmacist named Ahmed declined to provide the pill to a female reporter posing as a customer. A colleague explained to her that Ahmed did not sell the pill for ethical reasons. Boots also permits pharmacists to refuse to sell the pill on ethical grounds.
The BMA said it had received reports of Muslim students who did not want to learn anything about alcohol or the effects of overconsumption. They are so opposed to the consumption of it they dont want to learn anything about it, said a spokesman.
The GMC said it had received requests for guidance over whether students could omit parts of the medical curriculum and yet still be allowed to graduate. Professor Peter Rubin, chairman of the GMCs education committee, said: Examples have included a refusal to see patients who are affected by diseases caused by alcohol or sexual activity, or a refusal to examine patients of a particular gender.
He added that prejudicing treatment on the grounds of patients gender or their responsibility for their condition would run counter to the most basic principles of ethical medical practice.
Shazia Ovaisi, a GP in north London, said one of her male Muslim contemporaries at medical school failed to complete his training because he refused to examine a woman patient as part of his final exams.
He was academically gifted, one of the best students, but gradually he got in with certain Islamic groups and started to become more radical, said Ovaisi.
You could see there was a change in his personality as time went by. During the final exams he was supposed to treat a female patient in hospital. He refused to do it, even though it would have been a very basic examination, nothing intrusive.
But he refused and as a result he failed his exams. I was quite shocked and disappointed about it because I dont see there being anything in our religion that prohibits us from examining male and female patients.
Both the Muslim Council of Britain and Muslim Doctors and Dentist Association said they were aware of students opting out but did not support them.
Dr Abdul Majid Katme, of the Islamic Medical Association, said: To learn about alcohol, to learn about sexually transmitted disease, to learn about abortion, it gives us more evidence to campaign against it. There is a difference between learning and practising.
It is obligatory for Muslim doctors and students to learn about everything. The prophet said, Learn about witchcraft, but dont practise it.
“Trojan Horse Jihadists”
An excellent phrase describing Muslims in America. However, the descriptive phrase I prefer is:
BLOODY SAVAGES!!!
Perfect for Hillary Clinton Health Care, lower the standards for Doctors and Nurses to a 90 day certificate. More affordable, inner city job programs could even offer the training.
When that happens, you are invited to literally spit in the face of said dentist.
The answer is just so easy. If they won’t attend the medical training, then throw them out.
Perhaps British hospitals could also start segregating patients and staff by sex so as not to offend tender Muslim sensibilities.
Wait until they have to take the classes on abortions.
Do you really want a vet who thinks dogs are unclean??
Medical school merely provides a good cover for them while they await their orders to strap on the explosive-laden vests.
This happened to a friend of ours in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Muslim MD told him he was extremely ill, would soon die, nothing could be done and that the physician would not give him any further information because he “wouldn’t understand it, anyway.”
This is a highly-educated wealthy 70-year-old. He immediately booked an appointment at Mayo with a physician who was not Muslim. The patient had spent 6 months at altitude and had elevated red blood cell count. This is natural and the count becomes normal over time as the patient lives at sea level. Otherwise, he was in great shape and the second physician had simply looked at the history and uncovered the cause of the blood count results.
There is treatment for elevated red blood count, IIRC. It is phlebotomy. Even if our friend had had his condition from a disease process or congenital condition, it could have been treated easily. It seems that it is common in the Third World to not explain anything to a patient, so as not to *upset* them. The MD remains a high priest in control of vital information by doing this.
And, of course, the US will see a huge influx of mooselime docs when HilaryCare! is initiated — to fill the need for docs. Sharia by medical proxy, as they won’t treat women, et al.
Knowing so much about it perhaps you could name the parts of Canada were Sharia is allowed .
Coming to a med school near you folks! You are we kidding; remember some judge has already made allowances for a woman to take longer “breast feeding breaks”......this load of crap cannot be far behind.
Reminds me of those guys who wanted to learn to ‘fly’ planes but saw no need to learn to ‘land’them.
Medical knowledge like any knowledge can be used for EVIL as well as good.
We should be very suspicious of people who have no interest in the whole package—or the fundamental purpose of medicine which is following that infidel Greek guy’s ‘oath’.
One of the true minds that these Muslim students can claim for their own, Avicenna, would be spinning in his grave.
Won’t these male Muslim doctors have a problem treating women patients who under Islamic sensibilities cannot expose their naked bodies to anyone except their husband? Are there any female Muslim students in this medical school ...how can their being there be in concert with Muslim beliefs about the place of women in society??
My father was found by the police, unconcious, in his car by the side of the road several times. Once he was found with his car, still running, rolled up against the side of a building. He was taken to the ER. He was also found passed out on a bench at the fair one time and taken to the ER. On several occasions, he was combative.
Question for the muslim (I did not capitalize the word on purpose) DRs. Do you assume he is a mean drunk and let him sleep it off and/or refuse treatment because of your religious prejudices...... or do you check him out and find that he is diabetic and treat his low or high blood sugar?
But let me ask fellow Freepers a difficult question:
Would you be treated by an Islamic doctor?
Or, would you ask for someone else?
I would ask for someone else. I realize I speak only for myself.

Let em flunk.”
Yes- But start vetting them more thoroughly before they even get into any menical school.
Tuition doesn’t cover the cost of a student. The taxpayers in every country support schools. These students have stolen a space in the school from another student who is interested in serving the public, not their “religion”.
I would not only fluck them, I would demand that they reinburse the school for the portion of the cost of education that was paid by the taxpayers.
They are a total disgrace and never should have been allowed to enter the school in the first place, IMO.
