This is extremely upsetting to the looney libs. They want to blame the evil white man or western civilization.

Liberals have desperately searched in vain for evidence of syphilis in Europe before Columbus so as to disprove its American Indian origin.

Conclusive research shows however that syphilis is a New World mutation of yaws, existing among American aboriginals for many centuries before Columbus. An American Indian disease wiped out a third of Europe, to the great embarrassment of liberals.

Does any one know what Dennis Miller means when he says “touch Indians “?

I’ve read other articles over the years on this question. The description of Syphillis in the 1500-1600’s were particularly gruesome, the explanation was that the strains that killed their hosts too quickly died out after a few centuries tearing through the Old World.

I’ve also read that Malaria is an Old World import and did not exist in the Americas prior to the Age of Discovery.

The first cases of syphilis in Europe were in th port of Genoa, IIRC, but not until AFTER the discovery of the New World.

I never understood how the lefties got it so backwards. But the fact that they did speaks volumes as to their intellectual dishonesty.

Umm...Syphilis never remotely "wiped out a third of Europe."

I think you're confusing the Plague and Syphilis.

You'll drive yourself insane if you view everything through politics. The debate over the origin of Syphilis was simply a scientific debate; there are a lot of them, and people thought they had legitimate evidence it may have been in Europe prior to Columbus. It wasn't some vast left-wing conspiracy.

William McNeil (or MacNeil) made the yaws/syphillis connection and an argument for a New World origin 30 odd years ago in “Plagues and Peoples, the Influence of Disease on History”.

They want to blame the evil white man or western civilization.

It won't upset them.

They'll just say those evil smelly white men raped the indian maidens.

Or got them drunk with white man's firewater, and then did it.

(Although that's probably how it went.)

They are already saying this account doesn’t work since it is 10 years old. They say China has dug up some more recent accounts, and some Hull findings are around 1300 also.

If I remember correctly tobacco is a native american plant.

How many thousands, if not millions of people have been adversely affected if not killed by tobacco products through out the world since 1492?

If whitey, cracker man gave to world tobacco they would be called mass murders

When the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria returned to home port, many people noticed the popularity of a certain t-shirt among the crew of those ships:

My ship went to the New World, but all I got was this lousy venereal infection.

Syphillis comes from sheep.
Any "boot" knows that.
How long have sheep been around?
Would anyone care to go looking for Patient Zero?

Yes, it causes insanity. Al Capone died from it in prison.

Syphilis and Neanderthal Man

D. J. M. WRIGHT

Department of Venereology, Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London SE1

BONE changes in Neanderthal remains which, it has been suggested1, might be caused by rickets are not unlike those seen in certain treponemal diseases, notably congenital syphilis. Examining the Neanderthal collection at the British Museum (Natural History), I noted several features compatible with treponemal disease.

That article is a decade old. Since then, excavations of Italian graveyards have turned up evidence of syphillis prior to contact with the New World.

One hypothesis is that there was a New-World strain of syphilis less dangerous than the one that spread throughout the Old World, and the Indians had some immunity to the deadly strain from exposure to the weaker one. The Europeans lacked that immunity, in the same way that the Indians lacked immunity to smallpox.

IIRC, if a child got yaws in his youth, it was much like chicken pox and he soon got over it - but had lifetime immunity from the deadlier genetic forms.

There’s another viral disease in like the Dominican Republic that has much the same effect.

Yaws also existed in the Gold Coast part of Africa and was encountered by European mariners around the same time as they encountered America.
