Giuliani, Evangelical Rift Grows Over Abortion
The Christian Post ^ | October 5, 2007 | Michelle Vu

Posted on 10/05/2007 4:24:54 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Conservative evangelical leaders have long openly expressed dismay over the prospect of being forced to choose between two pro-choice presidential candidates. But now, a coalition of evangelicals has gone as far as to threaten to pull their support for the Republican Party if such a candidate is selected for the last stretch of the White House race.

Dr. James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family – who recently emerged from a controversy over a private email he sent criticizing Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson – says he and others in the social conservative coalition will not support Rudy Giuliani or any pro-choice candidate that the Republican Party picks for its presidential nominee.

“Polls don’t measure right and wrong; voting according to the possibility of winning or losing can lead directly to the compromise of one’s principles,” Dobson wrote in an Op-Ed in The New York Times on Thursday.

“In the present political climate, it could result in the abandonment of cherished beliefs that conservative Christians have promoted and defended for decades.”

Dobson said a candidate should support the “the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and other inviolable pro-family principles.”

Giuliani, on the other hand, supports abortion and gay rights.

Some Roman Catholic leaders have also opposed Giuliani’s stance on abortion. An archbishop from St. Louis this week said he would withhold communion from Giuliani, a Roman Catholic.

Giuliani’s personal life is also another red flag for some conservative Christians. The former New York mayor has been through three marriages, two divorces and is estranged from his two children.

Yet despite these moral obstacles, Giuliani is said to have reached out, with some positive response, to more than a dozen pastors of large evangelical churches and Christian leaders including Jonathan Falwell, the son of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson, according to the New York Times.

A recent Gallup Poll also found that the former New York City mayor had an overall favorable rating from churchgoing Protestants. Among the top tier Republican candidates, Giuliani rates third after Fred Thompson and John McCain among religious Protestants.

As the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, Giuliani has repeatedly stated he can beat Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton – an appealing statement for those who see Clinton as a larger threat.

But to Dobson and others in the coalition, “Winning the presidential election is vitally important, but not at the expense of what we hold most dear.”

The coalition met Saturday in Salt Lake City after a larger meeting of the Council for National Policy – an exclusive conservative networking group. The smaller group included Dobson, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, and dozens of other politically concerned conservative Christians.

How can he have any values if he thinks voting for Rudy or giving him any support in the Primary or the General is an OK thing?

I sincerly doubt that Rudy would tolerate things as they are now. Why would he? He believes passionately in a Woman’s right to choose.

Why should I believe a man who moderates his stand on a moral issue during the campaign without admitting he was wrong in the first place?

Rudy is a conniving, self-serving, power-hungry whore of a politician.

What I care about is winning the war against the jihad

It's too bad Giuliani doesn't share your conviction on national security. The WOT is global including our border with Mexico. It is a fact terrorists have posed as illegal aliens to enter and destroy the U.S. Despite this fact Giulaini supports granting amnesty to illegal aliens. Last month he went as far to say illegal immigration wasn't a crime! His type of national security will put every American life in peril.

Yes, he's a phoney. And there's more than one freeper that will do his bidding...some even think he's a great man.

We should purge the party of him.

Every single Republican candidate except our crazy uncle Paul would do as good, and probably better than mr. 9/11 without being wrong on almost every single other issue important to Republicans.

Not all conservatives care about the FMA...or abortion.

One can be a political conservative and support/not support either position. There is NO LINKAGE.

No, you are incorrect.

That would make you a libertarian more than a conservative.

Your answer is a complete non sequitur to my post #63. My reply in that post was solely in response to your statement about winning the war against Jihad and no other issue.

The United Methodist Church - Unversal Unitarian Church - many others are loaded with Socialist-Commie-Fruiter agendas and members

Catholic Priests and many Protestant ministers are running sanctuary scams to boost their dwindling memberships and fill their offering plates while they ignore the facts that those illegal aliens do not pay income taxes and rip of American taxpayers and bankrupt ERs and hospitals and the physicians who are mandated to treat anchor babies and their invader parents for 20¢ on the dollar from the feds

And smiling as they sip an evening brandy while America is being overwhelmed with lowlifes who kill, rob, rape, and use your daughter*s Social Security number and fakerooed IDs

They are not following the path of the man from Bethlehem

Get your hand out of my pocket or you will lose it TV slicksters

“We have to face the fact that unlike with Reagan or George W. Bush, no electable, historically pro-life candidate has emerged in our Republican line-up at this time.”

Screw that, if the Republicans cannot bring themselves to nominate a prolife candidate, I am out of there, along with countless millions of other concerned Americans. The Republican party will be in its death throes as there will be little difference between them and the Democrats. They both will have sold their soul to the devil.

That's a man of principal, yessiree.

No, a man with a brain that realizes that voting for a liberal Republican is going to harm the nation more than Hillary Clinton.

Giuliani would push for and get liberal legislation pasted that Hillary never could hope to. Giuliani will cost the Republicans seats in Congress while a Hillary Presidency gives them a chance to regain the majority, maybe as quickly as 2010.

And, if you think Giuliani is going to nominate conservative judges when he appointed liberal ones in New York when the Democrats control the Senate, you're living in a fantasy world.

I love and admire Mr Dobson,, but I cannot agree with him about this issue at all. I would have liked to asked him this question,, and I would put this question out there to anyone to answer who agrees to vote for a 3rd party can’t win candidate. If this were prewar Nazi Germany and you had the deciding vote in the election,,, and election laws were such that should the top candidates have a tie vote, the majority party would elect their leader, and the election were tied between 3 candidates,, Hitler at 50 votes, Rudy at 50 votes and a Christian conservative pro life candidate at 5 votes with the Nazi party being in the clear majority, I would like to know who these principled Christians would vote for?!! I am a Christian! But I think they are playing God as being stupid! They are acting RELIGIOUS IN THEIR VOTE!!! AS THOUGH THEIR VOTE IS AN ACT OF RELIGIOUS PURIFICATION! AS THOUGH GOD IS SO RIGID AND NARROW SIGHTED!! AS THOUGH GOD IS SENSELESS, AND UNABLE TO GRASP THE PURPOSES AND INTENTS OF A MANS HEART, OR THAT THE POLITICAL PROCESS IS JUST TO FAR ABOVE GODS UNDERSTANDING!
Dobson acts as though he should be commended,,, should he be entrusted by his neighbors with a set of keys belonging to their home,, that one day while they slept, he was forced to pass the keys on to another watchman,,, he hands them over to an invalid laying in the street as apposed to a much stronger, more capable, yet less religious friend,,, the invalid lays defenseless, without strength, surrounded by an angry mob waiting to steal the keys, tear him into pieces and murder the neighbors as they slept,,,, yet Dobson thinks he would be commended by God for choosing the invalid, while risking the murder of his neighbors,, Why???? Because the invalid was much more pure of heart,,, honest, kind and dear.

Alas, I believe our party is split...irrevocably.

We should all go about forming our new majorities.

What I care about is winning the war against the jihad...

Here's the dirty little secret about Hillary and the jihad--she won't withdraw most troops from Iraq. She's steadfastly refused to 'apologize' to the moonbats for her vote to authorize force in Iraq, and with her large lead in the Rat polls, she's not going to have to. She's smart enough to know that if she does do a rapid pullout, the carnage that would follow would be blamed on her, and would vindicate GWB's position.

Of course, this will be her undoing. The moonbats will not be mollified by Hitlery's explanations, they will want immediate, total, and absolute withdrawl from Iraq, and simply will not get it. Hill will have both the Republicans and the Rats hating her, and she will not be able to accomplish anything past the first three months of her term. We will get the Congress back in 2010.

How long will it take us to recover from a Rudy presidency? Perhaps a whole generation, maybe more, possibly never.

He does not care if Hillary and Slick Willie pollute the White House for 8 more years

I got just the opposite impression -- that he doesn't want a immoral liberal of either party in the White House.

In other words, you’re a single issue voter. You are so scared of Islamic terrorists, you’re willing to allow the Republican party to become one that is left-of-center and destroy the conservative movement in the process.
