Obama Stops Wearing Flag Pin |
Oct 4 03:06 PM US/Eastern |
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP)-
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said he doesn't wear the American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Asked about the decision Wednesday in an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Illinois senator said he stopped doing so shortly after the attacks and instead hoped to show his patriotism by explaining his ideas to citizens.
"The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.
"I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest," he said in the interview. "Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."
Obama was campaigning in Iowa Thursday, the second day of a four-day trip to the early voting state.

(bolding mine)
Does he wear a hammer & sickle?
I kinda agree with him there. Better that he wears an Islamic Jihad pin to show his true allegiance, and Hillary wears a ChiCom pin. Oh and John Edwards wears a $100 bill safety-pinned to his lapel.
How many times is he going to stop wearing that damn pin today?
I can only hope the American people would NEVER elect someone president who found a reason NOT to wear the flag of his own country. What a jerk.
This is an important story, because the left doesn’t really support America as it exists, they are only “patriots” to a far left wing America which does not exist and which they intend to bring about - by tearing down the existing nation and its traditions.
Exactly. He is one of 10 people basically looking to lead this great nation (of which, he has suggested "isn't great" to begin with, but "could be" if he were elected - Such conceit).
The notion that as a representative of this great nation, he still does not see the need to wear the flag is disgusting and small minded. It also shows a subtle dislike for this great nation. Plain and simple.
Obama has his Pinup Girl Here.
You Tube watched over 3 million times!
Was this a situation where he had to come up with a spur of the moment answer, or had he made an announcement about his decision to stop wearing the pin?
I for one am glad he stopped wearing it. This muslim plant is an embarrassment to the country and an insult to the flag.
My point was that this is the 8th time (at least) that this story has been posted today. Enough already.
No...a crescent and star.
Please go police some other thread.
I'm hoping that you recognize the irony of that directive.
Instead of an American flag pin, he wears the Islamic crescent.
I agree. How many times can we discuss a man's jewelery? Let's talk about his policies. It's kind of like this time in my Sunday school class when people started debataing whether you could be a true Christian if you didn't have one of those fish stickers on your car. I walked out. Stickers and jewelery don't matter. What you believe and how you act do.
To be the first voice of reason....
A pin is like a ribbon...it’s symbolism to get others to think you care. A tiny pin has no relevance to your patriotism. It’s like John McCain’s answer regarding not signing the tax’pledge’ - his record and integrity speaks for itself.
When did politicians start wearing this hokey pins anyway?
Obama’s idealogy, however, is near Socialist, and for that reason vote against him.
Just pass them by then.
