Israeli raid caused electronic disruption over wide areas of Syria

The lid of secrecy covering the Sept. 6 Israeli air strike into Syria remains tight but one new theory emerging amid the speculation is that the Israeli conducted an electronic warfare exercise in preparation for future strikes or an attack on Iran.

Authoritative reports from the Middle East stated that the Israel operation included extensive electronic warfare jamming by aircraft. The Israeli were testing the capabilities of Russian-made air defenses, including both radar and missiles located near Damascus and south of Homs near the Lebanese northern border.

The raid was unprecedented in the blanket of jamming and electronic disruption that it caused over wide areas of Syria enroute to the target point, a base near the Euphrates River.

The jamming also affected parts of Lebanon and Israel but Syria was able to get a small amount of sensor information from one of its electronic eavesdropping stations and spot the Israeli infiltration.

The raid was part of a U.S. “masint” operation according to this theory, referring to the military practice known as measurement and signature intelligence that is designed to learn the chrematistics and capabilities of all weapons in a region that emanate electronic signals. The masint signatures are needed for targeting and for defeating air defense threats.

The daring raid would gain valuable intelligence needed for future strikes by both Israel and the United States in the region.

The U.S. military is considering attacks on both Syria and Iran to counter infiltration by insurgents and terrorists into Iraq, including the Iranian paramilitaries. Israel could use the data for its battle against Hizbullah and possibly a future strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Journalist Jack Wheeler raised this idea in a recent report when he stated that the identity of the target, whether nuclear facilities, missiles or Hizbullah terrorists is “not the story.”

“The primary point of the attack was not to destroy that target,” Wheeler said. “It was to shut down Syria's Russian air defense system during the attack. Doing so made the attack an incredible success. Syria is shamed and silent. Iran is freaking out in panic. Defenseless enemies are fun.”

Well if you think of it, it causes them to spend billions buying more russian junk that will not work.

Heh hah. Theres a good point. :)

I suppose that, in one way or another, it is the fools in this world who have kept the Russian arms industry alive.
Thanks. -Bill

I agree. There was a primary reason for the attack, and testing defenses wasn't it.

I still believe that my original conclusion that they snatched some actual fissile material is correct, hence Bibi’s little clue about “stunning the world.”

Israel being able to fly in and bomb the Hell out of something in a third world arab cesspool is hardly earth shattering news, no matter how much russian junk that they swept aside to do so.

Hey, Sherm. I'm headed down to the coast this afternoon, but thought you should lead the anti-Military-Industrial-Complex forces on this thread! LOL! I'll check back later!

Missile Intercept Proves Defense System Is Capable of Protecting the USA (Successful Intercept!) ^ Posted by Shermy to sam_paine - 09/28/2007 6:35:43 PM CDT · 32 of 42 ^

Sam: “The American Aerospace Technology Denial machine is in full force!...Tell it to the Syrians and their super-duper Russkie Aircraft detection systems. Yeah.”

Shermy: Well, the Israelis were afraid of those systems pointed at Israel and made an elaborate left hook over Turkey to come in relatively safely from the north. Retreated that way too.

Besides his Turd Century violent pseudo non religion, he has spent billions to protect his country with 20 th century Russian worthless technology which caused the Russians to lose the cold war and $addam to lose two hot wars with us.

It's X-band (between 8 and 12.4 GHz). I just need a spectrum analyzer to find the exact carrier wave freq. It's very crowded around 11 GHz. Peak search and zero span to find out if it's AM or FM modulation. Drag out this huge X-band parametric amplifier and connect the waveguide to the gain horn aimed at the satellite. At a very specific frequency band. I did this on a smaller scale in Spain. For about 3 horas. We played The Doors, Stones and The Who; overriding the Spanish station. We put that stuff away.

We were a bunch of angels the next day when the base commander came by for a 'surprise' visit. Our First Seargent just knew we were up to no good. He just never found any evidence.

I think you mean Bill Moyers, not Bill Maher, on PBS.

Personally, I couldn't care less if you jammed Bill Maher as well, but that would require another frequency, I'd suppose.

I would think that an analog radar system could easily be “blinded.” In principle, re-radiate an inverted ping towards the emitter and you disappear.

Some of the VW types I ran with back in the early ‘70s wanted to have NATO designator for the Eastern Bloc radar systems they encountered changed to JOCKSTRAP.

...as in faked out of.

(There was also a group that favored PANTIES and a whole lot more descriptive subtitle, but we were too PC even then to go for that. Or at least the Old Man was.)

Didn’t see much stuff trotted out during GW 1 that we hadn’t used twenty years before and STILL hadn’t until this latest caper.

God knows what they’ve stuffed into all that space we used up with the black boxes of the last century, but I do know I’d hate to be a site commander on a TOR-M1. One of those EW Systems Operators could probably read out the color and size of his BVD’s and tell when he last washed ‘em.

....BTW, I don’t believe for a minute that the Syrian strike came close to showing our entire hand. Dirty Tricks Division first rule of engagement says never use a Two wood when all you need is an iron.
