"The American Legion, the nation's largest wartime veterans' service organization, strongly opposes specific provisions of H.R. 2640... that would unilaterally abrogate the rights of certain service-connected disabled veterans to own firearms, a right guaranteed by the Second Amendment." -- Statement by the American Legion, Sep. 27, 2007 |

First, there was Gun Owners of America and a myriad of state gun rights organizations.
Then, the Military Order of the Purple Heart weighed in.
Now, we've heard from the American Legion.
The list of groups in opposition to HR 2640 -- the Veterans Disarmament Act -- continues growing, even while Senators in our nation's capital are continuously being BOMBARDED by thousands upon thousands of phone calls and e-mails from grassroots gun owners like yourself.
In fact, your efforts have IMMENSELY STRENGTHENED the hand of Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK). In an article entitled, "Coburn's block may change strategy for gun bill," a Capitol Hill-based newspaper reported this morning that frustration is building over Coburn's "hold" on the legislation.
"We've tried to negotiate," Schumer said, adding that talks with Coburn are "'not getting that far. We might have to bring it to a vote."
But the newspaper article in The Hill stated that taking a recorded vote on the Veterans Disarmament Act could "complicate its initially strong prospects" of passage. As reported in The Hill:
"The National Rifle Association (NRA) supports the bill, which...

A liberal's lament: The NRA might be right after all By Jonathan Turley
Sen Coburn strikes again, the only Senator worth a damn.
You got that right.
We meet again.
In Like Flynn: What is Intelligence?
I'm not bashing the NRA. I just think they got it wrong. Indulge me with a mini-rant. IMHO, Senator Coburn and the American Legion are correct in their assessment H.R. 2640. I was a member of the VFW before the last time I went on active duty. I currently have no problem with the NRA except H.R. 2640. My dues was paid up about a decade ago. I have given very modest donations since then.
Whether it should be characterized as another camel's nose under the tent or a Trojan Horse, they should find another way to find relief from this NICS enabled, Second Amendment disability. IIRC, Senator Coburn trained in a family practice residency, and then he had additional training to be certified in obstetrics. He has a significant amount of training in medicine.
IMHO, there's a significant threat from electronic medical records and the tendency to expand politcally correct diagnoses that cause a permanent NICS disability. Various states wanted to prevent concealed carry privileges with all sorts of nonsense.
I thought the Turley revelation was a good demonstration of this point, as it only took 30 plus years for this 'Constitutional Scholar/ lawyer' to understand the plain English of tha 2A. IMO this was nothing more than..."see we really arent maliciously anti-gun, we just thought we were correct in our interpretation"
I'm no lawyer, but I do realize that if this becomes 'law', we will be dragged down a path of abuse and 'interpretation' of the written text for years to come.
Most every law pertaing to arms is an infringment by definition, better to quit adding layers of future disagreement, since we then must spend energies to fight those 'misguided' scholars instead of working to restore freedom...
The McCarthy/Leahy/Schumer serpent is holding out an apple. Even the NRA want us to take a bite.
Don't trust a serpent!
Warnings and truisms loaded with common sense and reality!
1- Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he’s too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.
2- If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
3- I carry a gun, ‘cause a cop is too heavy.
4- America is not at war. The U.S. military is at war. America is at the mall.
5- When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.
6- A reporter did a human interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him “Why do you carry a 45? “The Ranger responded with, “Because they don’t make a 46.”
7- An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.
8- The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. “Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?” “No Ma’am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.”
9- Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it. _____
If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. If I have a gun, what do I have to be paranoid about?
Just to make it an even ten.
I love it!
Thanks Soldier!
This bill stinks. We can do without it.
I’m saving that. Thanks.
I’m here to serve.
I'll have to agree with you. He stays under the radar and out of the press but whenever I hear him speak he just impresses the heck out of me. I'd take him over any of the current presidential candidates.
You mean the pack of pygmy's as Newt called them?
Inhofe is worth his salt, so was Santorum.
Santorum, Coburn, and this new Governor from Alaska, Sarah Palin keep me from doing my Diogene's imitation. Lately the GOP and Republican party has me feeling like they have given up on the Reagan Revolution and sold their souls.
Beck, Savage, and sometimes Ingraham have more common sense then all the Rep's and Senator's combined.
I think the GOP should recruit a completely new slate, all 535 of them, except the few mentioned, and get 535 that can "get-r-done".
Where to get them? All of them should be Officers that are now stateside, out of the service and served in Iraq or Afghanistan. These are America's best, not the current crop of windbags we have...
