For the past nine months, Mitt Romney has had a clear and explicit strategy: win Iowa, win New Hampshire and hope the momentum from those victories would carry him to the Republican nomination. For eight months, that strategy appeared to be working. But there are now signs of trouble in New Hampshire. Romney has experienced a September slide in the Granite State.
At the beginning of last month, his standing in New Hampshire hovered around 30 percent. Today, it's closer to 25 percent. Three polls in the past week have recorded a decline in his support, with Rudy Giuliani and perhaps even John McCain threatening his position. As the former governor of Massachusetts, Romney can ill-afford a loss in New Hampshire.
His next-door-neighbor status and the fact that he has a summer home in New Hampshire give him something akin to a home-state advantage.
A defeat in New Hampshire could negate the value of a victory in Iowa and put him on the defensive heading into what promises to be much more difficult terrain in the South. What the latest round of polling suggests is that Romney has not been successful in translating his victory in the Iowa straw poll last August into additional support there or in New Hampshire.

Romney’s mealy-mouthed slap at Rush yesterday (through a spokesman’s statement to the Huffington site) has finished him off. Watch Mitt fade away.
The rest of the country ain't buyin' what Romney's trying to foist on them with his wallet.
I just read about that tonight and couldn't believe it. What a complete dolt.
He can't even get the facts on THAT right and he wants to run the country?
I don’t like Mitt...will not vote for him..
“Romneys mealy-mouthed slap at Rush yesterday (through a spokesmans statement to the Huffington site) has finished him off. Watch Mitt fade away.”
He’s degenerated into full fledged pander mode... Watching the disintegration of his campaign has been amazing. I remember watching those first couple debates, and being so impressed. I remember getting a chuckle over his more recent “Dr. Strangelove” Obama comments. But there is no consistency to him - he’ll say whatever it takes to make headlines, or try to attract a new group of voters in a way he doesn’t think will hurt him with the other groups.
His comments towards Rush were designed to get independents and liberal minded types interested in his campaign. But as he’s increasingly demonstrating, his logic is flawed. These people are not the ones who vote in Republican primaries.
He’s turning into John Edwards II before our very eyes. Voters see through the fake eventually - like I said, I was once wowed by Romney - and that has been one benefit of this long campaign season... Giuliani and Romney are losing luster that might have propelled them to the nomination in a shorter season.
I missed it. What did he say? Or can you direct me to a thread about it? I'm out of the loop, I may be the only one at F.R. who doesn't know what he said.
He's been John Edwards II all along.
Governor Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military. There may be disagreements with individual opinions, but no one would ever dispute the fact that those members of the military who disagree with the war have earned the right to express that opinion.
He later retracted or somewhat retracted or said it was an error ...oh never mind ...LOL
You can read what he said here:

theres a post that quotes his dialogue.
Like father like son.
Through clumsiness, ignorance or a little of both, Mitt is p*ssing away any shot at the Presidency, just like his Dad did with his famous ‘brainwashed’ comment in the ‘68 campaign.
Thanks. Romney’s toast.
You are most welcomed ...anytime.
"..Mitt on September 28 swallowing the Media Matters line hook, line and sinker and, incredibly, SENDING A PRESS RELEASE TO THE FAR LEFT HUFFINGTON POST WEBSITE:
We don't know if Mitt, like he did when he denounced Gen. Pace after taking the word of an MSM reporter slander of Pace on gays, simply and lazily, responded off the cuff or made a calculated decision to attack the most credible important leader of conservative republicanism since Reagan left the public scene..."
Not only does Mitt not have a clue, neither does his staff. There really is no excuse for this.
Hes degenerated into full fledged pander mode... Watching the disintegration of his campaign has been amazing.
This is nothing new.
We saw the same thing when Romney ran against Ted Kennedy for the Senate in 1994. Mitt came out like gangbusters, a genuine conservative challenger to the liberal Kennedy. Mitt was actually leading in the polls for a while at the beginning. But as the campaign wore on, Mitt ran scared from the liberal Boston press and grew softer and softer until in the final debate he was virtually agreeing with everything Kennedy said!
It was disgraceful. Naturally, the softer Romney got the quicker his lead disintegrated and he was ultimately buried by Kennedy in a landslide, 58% - 41%.
The real Romney is showing his face, and it's a face we've seen before.
The man is NOT "Presidential timber".
Unbelievable, that he would sink that low.
I’m sure Hillary will give him a minor post in her administration as a gesture of Bipartisanship.
He could still wind up forcing socialized medicine upon us. Or she might make him head of the gun confiscation division of Homeland Security, if she doesn’t give that to Rudy.
It will be interesting to see how the Pro “RINOS FOR MITT” crowd explains this away.
Sheer genius... /s
