Since nobody knows
details, let's talk statistics.
Does anyone know

the largest death toll
in a single disaster
like a mine mishap?

3,200 South African miners trapped

Wed 3 Oct 2007, 20:27 GMT

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Some 3,200 miners were trapped underground on Wednesday at a South African mine belonging to the world's fifth biggest gold producer, the Harmony Gold company said.

Harmony spokeswoman Amelia Soares said the workers at the Elandsrand mine were trapped about 2,200 metres after an electrical cable of a lift carrying workers to the surface snapped at around 9 a.m. British time on Wednesday.

"They were underground when the accident happened and they were not able to surface because an electric feeder cable that is connected to the mine lift was severed," she said.

Soares said mine engineers were trying to retrieve the workers by lowering an adjacent lift to their position. She said the rescue operation could last well into Thursday morning, as it may only be possible to lift out a few hundred at a time.

Production at Elandsrand had halted for the day and would remain so on Thursday, she said.

With access to an adjacent, if not smaller and slower lift, this doesn’t sound like “trapped” to me. This just sounds like “slow exit”, and not worthy of a global news story....

from News24 South Africa:

3 000 trapped in mine - NUM
03/10/2007 21:35  - (SA)

Johannesburg - A burst water pipe has trapped 3 000 workers underground at Harmony Gold’s Elandsrand mine in Carletonville since Wednesday morning, said the National Union of Mineworkers.

Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the workers had been trapped since 10:00.

He said there was no emergency exit in the shaft, adding that it had “not been maintained for ages”.

The mine could not be immediately reached for comment.

“The worst coal mining disaster in the world took place on April 26, 1942 in Benxihu Colliery, located at Benxi, Liaoning. A coal-dust explosion killed 1,549 miners working that day.”

According to wiki...

As an industrial accident Bhopal rates right up there - 3K DRT and another 15K sick.

Earlier in the industrial age:
Oppau explosion in Germany occurred on September 21, 1921 when a tower silo storing 4500 tons of a mixture of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate fertilizer exploded at a BASF plant in Oppau, now part of Ludwigshafen, Germany, killing 500–600 people and injuring about 2000 more. BASF, we don’t make the product.....

WIki lists all types of disaster, with dates & areas for the more ghoulish aiming us.....

OMG! Thousands of prayers going up for all of them to make it out safely! :*(

My tin foil hat just came out—is it possible this happened due to sabotage? Terrorist bomb or something?

Sounds like they aren’t in any immediate danger, just without electricity and thus without a means to get out. Good news; better than hearing there was a cave in or an explosion, or something like that.

I wonder if "ages" means since 1994?
