Saint Louis (AP) -- Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke, who made headlines last presidential season by saying he'd refuse Holy Communion to John Kerry, has his eye on Rudy Giuliani this year. Giuliani's response: "Archbishops have a right to their opinion."
Burke, the Archbishop of St. Louis, was asked by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch if he would deny Communion to Giuliani if the former New York mayor approached him for the sacrament.
"If the question is about a Catholic who is publicly espousing positions contrary to the moral law, and I know that person knows it, yes I would," the paper quoted the archbishop as responding.
Burke has said of Giuliani: "I can't imagine that as a Catholic he doesn't know that his stance on the protection of human life is wrong. If someone is publicly sinning, they should not approach to receive Holy Communion."
Asked about it Wednesday while campaigning in New Hampshire, Giuliani said:
"Archbishops have a right to their opinion, you know. There's freedom of religion in this country. There's no established religion, and archbishops have a right to their opinion. Everybody has a right to their opinion."
Burke says that anyone administering Communion is morally obligated to deny it to Catholic politicians who support an abortion-rights position contrary to church teaching.
He is expected to push the nation's bishops to take that stance in a document on political responsibility they will issue to Catholics before the 2008 election.

First of all revoking the tax exempt status of churches without revoking the same for other charitable organizations of a secular nature is unconstitutional facially. Second of all any call for more taxes in state coffers is a lefty loon call. And finally the Church and it's relationship to it's members is none of your business or the states business.

Exactly what part of Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof is unclear to you?
You can take away our tax exemptions if you want. Just make sure you take away the tax exemptions of every other religious organization in the country. And, while you're at it, having to support Planned Parenthood with my tax dollars is repugnant to me and a direct violation of my freedom to practice my religion, so take away their tax funding while you're at it.
"Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every
single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion
about what you do and how you do it."-- Rudy Giuliani, New York Times, March 17, 1994
You said it for me :-)
You said it for me.
That’s 2 in a row.
That’s 3 times in a row.
Even Rudy would not have the happy rocks to try and receive Communion. Has Cardinal Egan given RG Communion?
Not what Paul was talking about - he was talking about not sharing communion with the poor, and getting drunk on the wine.
Needs to be boldly repeated over and over.
Frightening. He must be Satan's Sister. Or else its the Hildebeast in drag.
It’s on my profile page—and NOT because I agree with it!
“Frightening” is an understatement!
Cordially,
Ah, the probing for a hypothetical to stir up controversy. Yet another shallow stunt from the decaying news media.
Rudy’s been divorced. Why would he even think about going?
Catholic politicians are "souls" too. It would be a very serious sin for a politician like Giuliani to take Holy Communion. The archbishop is trying to spare him from adding that sin to his already long list.
That sounds like it came from the Episcopal Bible. Did they stick that in when they got rid of the parts about sodomy?
Yes, I agree. Those clergy, right or left, who are trying to do in this or that candidate are seen as medlers and do not speak well for their position. Better to affirm their position and leave the voters decide on the outcome.
E-mail/ping me if you want on/off the list! SPREAD THE WORD!!!
Catholic Church holds true to its Faith, Rudophiles say, “shut the hell up, Catholic Church!” Any comments, my Conservative brethren?
I happen to agree with your argument 100 percent....especially “not the control of government, not the intimidation of voters and not the policy-making of a secular government.”
Those who cheer now are those who have cursed Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and others for attempting to influence domestic policies from a church pulpit. Bill Clinton was served Communion in a Catholic Church. Rudy should already know he cannot receive. It should not be an issue.
