BBC: Israel admits air strike on Syria
BBC ^ | Tuesday, 2 October 2007, 14:11 GMT 15:11 UK | BBC Staff

Israel has confirmed that it carried out a strike on a Syrian military installation last month.

Syria accused Israel at the time but Israeli officials refused to comment, and the Israeli military censor imposed a strict blackout on information.

The censor's office has now allowed some details to be released.

On Monday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told the BBC that a Syrian military construction site was hit in the Israeli air strike on 6 September.

Israeli Army radio reported that Israeli planes attacked a military target "deep inside Syria", quoting the military censor. No further details were given.

Mystery remains

It is still not known why Israel carried out the strike or what exactly was hit.

Some US officials have linked the raid to suspicions of secret nuclear co-operation between Damascus and North Korea. Damascus and North Korea have denied any nuclear ties.

Other reports suggested that the raid may have targeted Iranian arms bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Map

In the early hours of 6 September a number of Israeli jets appeared to enter Syrian airspace from the Mediterranean Sea.

Later, unidentified drop tanks, which may have contained fuel from the planes, were found on Turkish soil near the Syrian border, indicating a possible exit route.

Witnesses said the Israeli jets had been engaged by Syrian air defences in Tall al-Abyad, north of Raqqa and near the border with Turkey.

Syria and Israel are formally at war. Israeli has occupied the Golan Heights since 1967. Peace talks between them collapsed in 2000.

Debka’s take is at:
http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=4640

They claim that Syria dare not respond until they
puzzle out why the IAF was able to fly in and out
undetected ...

... and that Basher has a limited amount of time
to rope-a-dope on this before he gets replaced.

“Mystery remains

It is still not known why Israel carried out the strike or what exactly was hit.”

So let me get this straight.

Syria sets up Hezbollah to sneak into Israel and abduct soldiers as hostages = “Syria has struck out at Israel because Israel is a bad, bad, evil nation”

Israel deploys military force behind Syrian lines = “Israel answered the Hezbollah attack by beating up the poor, suffering children of Syria” (No mention made of the hostages AT ALL)

Syria WINS THE WAR BECAUSE ISRAEL STOPPED WHEN THE UN TOLD THEM TO (My head is STILL spinning)

And these scum sucking dirtbags have the NERVE to say “It is still not known why Israel carried out the strike”

*@#& them. I almost wish I could enroll in the Israeli army for a bit to help the proper cause.

Why shouldn’t Israel admit it? Shout it from the rooftops. The IAF penetrated Syria’s air defenses with total impunity, destroyed the nuclear material, and made it home without a scratch. What a great accomplishment for their Air Force. Ahmedinajad, you’re next, you dirty little goat lover!

Syria and Israel are formally at war.

Well then neither the Syrians, Arab League nor the U.N. have any right or reason to bitch about an Israeli attack.

Each day, it sounds like there was a real raid with real results by the IAF into Syria’s dark side.

It’s strange how the news is coming out, seems like Israel is playing a very strong hand in this card game:

Syria TODAY confirmed it was indeed a building, was military, but under construction and unoccupied. (admission and downplay)

Why the admission?

Concurrently Israel confirms TODAY for the first time officially that there was an air-strike. (nothing resembling a justification is offered)

Seems like somebody got caught doing something outrageous in Syria.

Syria has just recently for help dealing with “refugees.”

Does “refugee” translate to Syrian as “insurgent” or maybe “Iranian arms trafficker”?

Are they sporting a new conscience?

Syria will deny the target was nuclear, WMD storage or important in any other way.

It will say the building was just a little ol' aspirin factory.

The real reasons behind the strike are not given and therefore comments are rather difficult to generate on this one. The details may long be held under wraps neither side wanting to divulge anymore then they have to.

As I commented to Ernie, we may not know exactly what was destroyed for a long time. I’m just glad the IAF was able to ingress and egress without losing any pilots. If ground assests where also used, one cannot help but wonder if indeed they where able to make their way to the Turkish or Iraq border in tack.

Netanyahu also said when the truth about this raid comes out it will shock everyone [I assume meaning what was hit and how grave it could have been if, we’d not attacked it/them.]. So, I’m anxiously awaiting that truth.
