It is one crazy world when the man who rules Iran with an iron hand, denies the Holocaust, and vows to destroy Israel can speak at Columbia University, but the former president of Harvard and former Secretary of the Treasury cant speak at U.C. Davis.

I always thought we liberals were supposed to be in favor of free speech, open discussion, the marketplace of ideas, the notion that good ideas can defeat bad ones.

It does us no good to forcibly silence those who say out loud what others believe in private.

Grow up Susan. Your liberal group ain’t so liberal.
Susan is having a spell. She’ll get over it soon.
I hope not. She said some things that need to be said on her side of the fence.
Dang. She almost sounds like a conservative, wishing to confront concepts with facts.
Liberal owning up to the undeniable final truth:
“This wasn’t what we wanted!!”
Sorry, Mzzzzz Estrogen, you can’t have it both ways.
Why are the male/female ratios of Nobel Prize recipients in Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology/Medicine so lopsided? There must be a lot of countries where rampant sexism is holding back the female Einsteins and female Feynmans. (Of course that is true in the Muslim countries, but most of the Nobel Prize winners in the hard sciences are from the US, Europe, Japan, Canada, or Australia.)
I can remember when Liberals were usually strong advocates of free speech. It would be a good thing if that type of Liberal were to regain control from the outright loonies.
If Summers wasn’t a former Clinton flunky, Estrich would be calling for his head.
You're thinking perhaps of the "Classic Liberal", which is to say, (small-l) libertarian. Freedom of speech is a central libertarian principle.

"Modern Liberal" is nearly a synonym for "Socialist", and socialists are not noted for supporting free speech.
Our daughter earned 3 undergrad degrees in four years and now, she’s a candidate for a PhD in Genetics. She’s worked her butt off for all of it and never expected to do anything less.

Were I to run a school i’d allow all kinds of folks to speak. I always liked going to see speakers from the otherside. It was interesting and challenging. Students need to be challenged and frankly aren’t challenged with enough conservative speakers.

As I recall, Larry Summers merely voiced a speculative contributing cause for the much lamented disparity in numbers of women vs. men in certain professions. He did not offer a statement of alleged fact, or even that what he said was his personal conviction. The reaction by the radical feminist thought police and their spineless lackeys to his words demonstrated clearly their willingness to punish prohibitively public expression of certain thoughts.
I’m delighted that he was banned. It just demonstrates the extremism of the left.
- So, Ms. Estrich, what in heaven's name made you want to become a liberal in the first place?
- I always thought liberals were supposed to be in favor of free speech, open discussion, the marketplace of ideas, and the notion that good ideas can defeat bad ones.
- Free speech? Open discussion? The marketplace of ideas? Get real - these are liberals we're talking about.
- Clearly I was misinformed...
Bwaaaaaaaaa. Good one, Susan. It almost sounded like you meant it for a second or two.
No, I know what I'm thinking of.
