Fred Thompson has pulled to within 8 points of Mitt Romney in Iowa, and now occupies 2nd place alone in a new poll out by Newsweek. Below are the numbers from the Newsweek poll taken Sept. 26-27.

Perhaps just as significant as Fred's strong move up, is another set of figures from the Newsweek poll. They asked respondents just how strong they supported their candidate. Here are the numbers for Fred, Mitt, and Rudy, with"Strong" listed first followed by "Not Strong/Lean". . . . .

Oh, excuse me, I didn’t realize I was posting to a REAL Tennessean, who’s got Fred Thompson all figured out, better than the rest of us!

I’ll vote for whomever is our nominee, even if it’s Mitt, but your reply to me reflects your unwillingness to really listen and figure out what Fred Thompson actually supports and believes.

Now, who’s the bumpkin?

You do realize that even the CDC conceded that polls were obsolete, that there is a dwindling number of landline phones, right?

Hmmm... You're right. Undoubtedly Paul is actually commanding 85% of GOP primary voters.

I'm not sure how reliable Newsweek can be considered to be but there is no way to say that this rise in the polling is completely meaningless.

Fred is showing traction in states and in straw polls where his campaign has made virtually no effort and where it faces some real hurdles.

I think there was a segment of the party looking for an alternative to Rudy McRomney. These numbers obviously reflect that. But will Fred be able to add to that core of support he already has and where will he draw those numbers from?

As for Mitt's large and well-funded early campaign in IA and NH, I'd point out that quite often the candidate with the most money doesn't win in Republican primaries. Money helps but you have to have the right message and a good presentation.

I still wouldn't bet against Mitt in IA or NH. The man has a habit of success, he has the money, he's an attractive and personable candidate and many elements of his message are appealing.

This must be why, this morning on “This is Weak” with Snuffleupagus, Donna Brazile said the Thompson campaign is “sputtering.”

She’s such a liar. FEAR FRED, Donna!

Ron Pat Paulson will do much better in states where Rats can vote in Republican primaries. Now that she has the lock, look for some “Republican” switches. Same place this “5%” is coming from.

Pray for W and Our Troops

I never understood how some states allow that.

We will know all pretty much that we need to know in just a few days when the campaign funding reports come out. If candidates could not raise in the 3rd quarter, they won’t raise in the 4th, and for many there won’t even be a 4th.

With all the time and money Mitt has spent in Iowa, a 2nd Place finish by Fred in Iowa would be a VICTORY.

(Remember; an Arkansas Governor in ‘92 came in 2nd in New Hampshire and gave himself the title of “The Comeback Kid”.)
