RALEIGH, N.C. — About half of the public approves of how Sen. Elizabeth Dole is doing her job a year before she runs for another six-year term, according to a poll released Friday.
The Elon University Poll also found Hillary Clinton has a sizable lead over John Edwards in his home state for the Democratic presidential nomination, while former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is apparently ahead of Rudy Giuliani among Republicans.

The poll also found Clinton receiving 37 percent of support for president among Democrats surveyed, compared to 18 percent apiece for Edwards and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.
While North Carolina likely won't play a role in choosing the Democratic nominee since its primary is in May, Bacot said Edwards' poor showing "is noteworthy given that this is Edwards' home state."
Among Republican candidates for president, Thompson received support of 28 percent, followed by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 21 percent, Sen. John McCain at 12 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 8 percent.
Looking at next year's race for governor, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue has an apparent lead over State Treasurer Richard Moore for the Democratic nomination, 35 percent to 27 percent, but 38 percent surveyed hadn't made up their minds.
Perdue will begin her campaign for governor on Monday in New Bern.
The uncertainty was much greater among Republican choices for governor, with two-thirds polled not choosing a candidate. Salisbury attorney Bill Graham had 12 percent of the vote, following by state Sen. Fred Smith and former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr at 11 percent apiece.
The presidential and gubernatorial surveys had margins of error between 6 percantage points and 7 percentage points.

Once again, it seems the NC GOP doesn’t know who it wants for governor: I presume that they will have a candidate on the ballot? They haven’t won that governorship since, when, 1988?
Yes, I would have thought that Burr would have been the more reliable conservative, but no, Dole is more conservative and usually reliable. However, I think in her heart Dole would like to take liberal positions, but she is trying to hold her thin base together. Burr seems like a sure loser in 2010: that is the seat that always changes hands after one term.
Sorry to disappoint you, but HRC can win NC, but she may not. She can certainly sweep forty states if the anti-GWB sentiment is as strong in November 2008 as it may well be. Besides GWB is already “advising” her so that she won’t remove the troops from Iraq. States like CO, VA, NV, OH are headed Democrat and that means HRC wins.
Well, I was under the impression that both Doles visited Mrs. Hanford in Salisbury on a regular basis.

However, I really had a lot of high hopes for Burr. He is a very like able person, a war vet and so on. With NC’s Democrat leanings I think he figured he was safe in taking the amnesty position. Really made me mad, him knowing how his constituents stood on the issue.
