Yes, I would have thought that Burr would have been the more reliable conservative, but no, Dole is more conservative and usually reliable. However, I think in her heart Dole would like to take liberal positions, but she is trying to hold her thin base together. Burr seems like a sure loser in 2010: that is the seat that always changes hands after one term.

I think that you are right about Senator Dole, wanting to take a more liberal position that is. I thought she would really be a lot of trouble for the Republicans. She proved me wrong.

However, I really had a lot of high hopes for Burr. He is a very like able person, a war vet and so on. With NC’s Democrat leanings I think he figured he was safe in taking the amnesty position. Really made me mad, him knowing how his constituents stood on the issue.
