Not All War Films Created Equal (Haditha Schlock-umentary)
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | Sept 27, 2007 | Scott Roxborough

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain -- Getting your film to stand out at a major festival can be hard enough in the best of times, but these days, if your subject is the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan, it is even easier to get lost in the crowd.

Films as varied as Nick Broomfeld's "Battle for Haditha," Paul Haggis' "In the Valley of Elah" and Hana Makhmalbaf's "The Buddha Collapsed out of Shame," all get lumped together as "war films."

At the press conference following the competition bow of "Haditha," Broomfeld repeatedly dogged reporters' attempts to link his movie -- a dramatized retelling of the massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians by U.S. marines in November 2005 -- with other Iraq titles such as Brian De Palma's Venice Silver Lion winner "Redacted"

Broomfeld called talk of a new raft of Iraq films "lazy journalism."

Reading between the lines, it sounds like this clown Broomfield is falling flat on his face. I’d like to believe it’s because the TRUTH about the justified killing of insurgents and collaborators at Haditha is finally getting out.

I will not be going to any Mav’s games this year because I can not stand the little puke faced owner anymore after he helped finance the film!!

Believe me..I fully expect him to get booed out of the stadium at any home games he dares to enter this season!

That's my reading, too, Lancey. No distribution deal.

Some stills from The Battle of Haditha...

After an IED blast, stressed-out Corporal Ramirez (played by Marine veteran Elliot Ruiz) guns down innocent Iraqis beside a white taxi in revenge.

In the first two frames, stressed-out and vengeful Marines shoot an unarmed Iraqi inside a house.
In the second two frames, a peace-loving Iraqi is gunned down by yet another stressed-out Marine outside.

Don’t vote for Mark Cuban on Dancing With the Stars either.

"I think it will take a brave distributor to put it (in the U.S.)," Broomfeld acknowledged. "A lot of distributors like to take the easy option and go for the easy buck and I'm not sure my film is either of those things ... But I made the movie for an American audience, to start a discussion on what we should do about Iraq."

Mr. Broomfeld would do well to realize that he's screwed with brave Americans. Brave distributor my arse. What dictionary does the maroon use?

My Oh My! Ain't we early bloomers today, Darlin'!!! :-)

As for Broomfeld, well, you know the drill, he can just stick it where the sun don't shine.

He'll never walk with Patriots, he'll never walk with us.

May the sun shine on you today, Ma, as it always will.

Thank you for the blessing, dear smooth!!

I received this in an email, and want to share:

From a Chaplain in Iraq

I recently attended a showing of ‘Superman 3’here at LSA Anaconda. We
have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services
and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we
stood and Snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the
main feature.

All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through
the National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back
in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few
rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of
course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first
place.

Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed
forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly
stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped.

What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter, as
everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start.

But here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to
stand at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and
quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand Soldiers,
finishing where the recording left off:

‘And the rockets red glare, the bo mb s bursting in air, Gave proof
through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that
star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of
the brave?’

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq . I wanted you
to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here.

Written by Chaplain Jim Higgins on 5/14/07.

LSA Anaconda is at the Balad Airport in Iraq , north of Bagdad .

Reme mb er them as they fight for you! Pass this along as a reminder to
others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here at home
and abroad... For many have already paid the ultimate
price....

ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THOSE WHO SERVE

You've blessed my day as well, with that fine Chappy's message to us.

I'll share this last one with you, dear freema, and then I'm off for my morning jaunt. Have yourself the most wonderful of days today, for you have started mine well indeed.

Letter to Editor....

I recently read "Flags of Our Fathers." The book points out that during World War II Japanese psychological warfare experts developed a message they felt would work to demoralize American forces.

They gave the script to their famous broadcaster, Tokyo Rose, who had the best music on her station and every day she would broadcast the same message to the troops, packaged in different ways.

What was that demoralizing message? It had three main points: your president and generals are lying to you, this war is illegal, and you cannot win the war.

If this sounds familiar, it is because we have been bombarded for the last three years by Tokyo Hillary, Tokyo Harry Reid, Tokyo Teddy, Tokyo Nancy Pelosi, Tokyo/Hanoi Kerry, Tokyo Moveon.org, Tokyo Murtha; Tokyo Howard Dean and they have picked up the same message and are broadcasting it on Tokyo ABC, Tokyo CBS, Tokyo CNN, and Tokyo NBC to our troops.

The only difference is that they claim to support our troops before they demoralize them. Come to think of it, Tokyo Rose told the troops she was on their side, too but she hated the war. That is like coming home and telling your wife, "Honey, I love you", and then telling her "I hate the way you cook."

I don't know, but here's a link to the letter and the paper. Send them a letter, ask them and let me know what they say.

I'm back, and Mrs. Smooth is up bangin' that fryin' pan in the kitchen! I'm smellin' breakfast!

And you know what I'm gonna say to her, "Honey, I love you, and I love the way you cook!"

I'll check in this evening Ma to see what you're up too.

Give your Marines my humble, always supportive, and always proud salute.

If this asshat Broomfeld really cared, he'd do something like this link, I've never seen anything better done by a TV ad. Best commercial ever made.

THANK YOU

Now I know why I like a cold bottle of Bud now and then.
