Missile Defense Based in Poland Might Stop Attack Aimed at U.S.

By KEITH J. WINSTEIN September 26, 2007 11:44 p.m.

A proposed missile defense system in Poland would be able to intercept Russian missiles launched at the U.S., according to an analysis by a prominent missile-defense critic.

The Missile Defense Agency, a part of the Department of Defense, strongly disputes the calculations, by Theodore A. Postol, a professor of national security policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Postol is best known for his criticism of the efficacy of the Patriot antimissile system's performance in the 1991 Gulf War.

As part of its negotiations with Poland and Russia over the proposed European-based missile shield, the Pentagon has said that the proposed system "would not be capable" of intercepting Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles launched at the U.S.

What is sad is that liberals in this country will join the Russians in opposing the idea.

Because it's < libwhine> not fairrrr </libwhine> that America is not exposed to the same threats as everyone else it.

I bet the left will be crappin' their pants if they understand what happened with the Israeli strike into Syria.

Wouldn’t a Russian ICBM attack come over the pole, not the Poles? Seriously, the ABM’s are not going to be able to hit missiles aimed northward.

Facts don’t matter.

It’s about the money. And keeping it rolling in.

I think that missiles launched from southwestern Russia would come within the engagement envelope. I also believe that any Russian attack would have more missiles than the Polish base would have interceptors, thus while some missiles would be stopped I doubt is would be a larger fraction than the number that malfunction.

SO it is against Russia as we suspected. Putin was right all along:). So Poles will be the first casualties of any conflict.

The premise is that the sudden massive nuclear attack will destroy all Russian nuclear capability and their ability to retaliate. Poland-based interceptors are planned to shoot down few that Ruskies may be able to launch in the last moment.

This is dangerous gamble, because even 1/% margin of error could result in NYC and other major U.S./European cities being wiped off the map.

You just made clear that Putin only wants to attack anyone anyhow. I’m not scared of Russian missiles, so far they are all breaking down and falling either on Georgian or Ukrainian territory.
Putin instead of developing Russian society tries to develope arms...
HDI clearly shows that Russia is behind such countries as Cuba (50), Mexico (53), Bulgaria (54), Tonga (55), Oman (56), Trinidad and tobago (57), Panama (58), Malaysia (61).
When oil prices drop just like they did in 1998 and 2002 Russia will suffer from famine surely. Then they’ll have to eat their tanks and missiles.
Of course, guess who’ll be there to be blamed. US, EU, Nato and everyone.

Hmmm....Ok, Ruskies hit the Polish facilities first, then send the missiles onward to us...Sounds like there’s a simple way around this for the Russians.

Because of West don’t want to live peacefully and continue to develop the new threats toward Russia. ABM is just one small step on the long road.
You Poles will suffer in first place during any smallest conflict between Russia and West because you do everything you can to make it worser for the russian security. You simply do not understand that Russian may reach or not America but you are so close to reach:).

Exactly it is what Putin told all along. Russia will deploy new short range missile in Kaliningrade region. It will take only 2 mins after start to hit polish installations.

Then you’d better hurry up with your wars, considering the fact that male life expectancy is 59 years, your nation is going to be dead before any kind of second cold war ends.

I suppose a case can be made by the Russians that setting up a missile defense system in Cuba could prevent a U.S. attack on them. How would we react to their doing so?

Anti missile shield as you may know is “anti-missile”... The shield won’t be able to attack ground targets, so it’s not aggresive weapon. It’s Russia that is a threat to civilised world. It’s Russia that is constructing new weapons, just to kill more people not to protect them.
