Dealing with global warming will be painful, says one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress. To back up his claim he is proposing a recipe many people won't like a 50-cent gasoline tax, a carbon tax and scaling back tax breaks for some home owners.
"I'm trying to have everybody understand that this is going to cost and that it's going to have a measure of pain that you're not going to like," Rep. John Dingell, who is marking his 52nd year in Congress, said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press.
Dingell will offer a "discussion draft" outlining his tax proposals on Thursday, the same day that President Bush holds a two-day conference to discuss voluntary efforts to combat climate change.
But Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that will craft climate legislation, is making it clear that he believes tackling global warming will require a lot more if it is to be taken seriously.
"This is going to cause pain," he said, adding that he wants to make certain "the pain is shared in a way that is fair, proper, acceptable and accomplishes the basic purpose" of reducing greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels.

It makes a big difference. All that tax money allows “walkin’ around” money payments to get re-elected.
My best friend was one of the civilian housing officers at Ramstein. He told me he could have made a FORTUNE selling the U.S. gas coupons they were issued.
In fact, isn’t the tax per Litre? Which makes it even more oppresssive.
The people who are dumb enough to vote Dem in the first place aren't even aware of how much tax is included in the price of a gallon of gasoline. If this tax ever passes, it will be immediately followed by a barrage of MSM stories about record oil company profits and CEO salaries. By the time the idiots see the jump at the pump, they'll already have their bad guy.
In other words, middle class families who work hard and do well and can afford to build nice-sized homes will be punished.
Meanwhile, the homes of the very wealthy will be exempt - since they have already inherited historic homes or will be able to spend millions to purchase and rehab old properties.
“the pain is shared in a way that is fair, proper, acceptable and accomplishes the basic purpose”
This sort of tax is regressive. It has the greatest impact on the rural poor. They usually have long distances to travel for work, etc. They usually have no other alternative form of transportation. They usually are already paying the greatest cost for gas because they are subsidizing competitive pricing in urban areas.
This has a compound effect on the viability of local businesses in rural areas that cannot compete with other areas and countries because the cost of transporting the raw materials they produce becomes a limiting factor. Also, agriculture and timber indistries are large comsumers of oil products (diesel and fertilizers) and the tax, unless they are exempted, could raise the costs of inputs into their business. This could raise the cost of domestic food and wood products or render them non-competitive with foreign producers. It also creates greater input costs for the production of alternative fuels such as biomass and ethanol.
Bad urban idea.
This will be one of the issues that will doom the Democrats. If Republicans are stupid and don’t take a firm stand against the Global warming foolishness they will be passing up a sure fire way to drive a wedge between the public and the Democrats desire for new taxes.
I’d be repeating a simple mantra, “Democrats think you aren’t paying enough for gasoline.” “Raise your hand if you think you don’t pay enough taxes or enough for your gasoline?”. It should be cast in terms of food and milk for babies. Tell the people in the crowds that you aren’t going to stand by while the carbon taxes and gasoline taxes raise the cost of groceries. I’d also put together a whole slew of simple effective phrases that will continually cast doubt in the mind of the public where the silly claims and fears of global warming are concerned. Make it a fight. People will have a propensity to not want to believe anything that will raise their taxes and cost of gasoline. Don’t let the left get away with this big lie.
What is the cure for Dingell?
“How about before we soak Joe Middle Class with a huge tax increase, lets first cut entitlement spending by 50% and cut Congressional salaries by 50%. Do that first, then well talk about a gas tax increase.”
I like your way of thinking.
Good luck Buckwheat!
Needed to save the Republic from these damned lifetime political careerists.
Damn them all!
Considering that the guy just released this you might want to allow the GOP candidates a little time to answer.
I would be very surprised if Thompson at least does not jump on this. And I would expect that most, if not all, the imprtant GOP candidates to hit this.
You know, if we can’t turn this into a winning issue, there’s no hope left for the country.
He can KISS my ***, I don’t get ANYTHING back by supposedly “reducing Global warming”. THis is just another liberal-spendthrift policy (probably to pay for another bloated government program).
Fine. I have an idea. Resign fro the political trough and go back to where you came from and get a real job and pay for your own perks and maybe you'll get a clue how it feels to have a bunch of cavalier clowns like you pissing our money away faster than we can earn it
All we need to do to fight global warming is get all that hot air out of Washington D C.
My husband and I talked about the GOP loss in
06.He was up in arms over the fact that the dems took control of congress and said he just KNOWS that the dems will take the WH in 08.
I told him then,”you worry too much. All you gotta do is just let the dems be,and they’ll spend so much time tripping over their own male-type organs that by the time election day comes, their own constituents-as well as those with a brain-will be so fed up with them, there’s no way they’ll get elected.”
The party’s moved even further into moonbat territory than they were during Clinton’s salad days, and too many folks will see that, and that will seal their fate.
I have faith. I’m NOT worried. They keep doing one horrendously stupid thing after another, and isn’t it delicious that they’re doing it now, right before we get to the really serious part of the election cycle?
I think this might be a poison pill - he does not want this increase because he is very much a “car company” guy. It is like lowering the blood alcohol level to .02. It looks like you REALLY care when in fact you just want nothing to be approved.
