WASHINGTON The hope for immediate Senate action on the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants, faded Tuesday as the measure's chief Senate sponsor acknowledged he was having difficulty surmounting Republican opposition.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has been seeking to attach the DREAM Act to the defense authorization bill pending in the Senate. But in an interview Tuesday, he said the DREAM Act isn't among the items on the table as Republican and Democratic leaders discuss ways to quickly wrap up debate on the defense bill.
"We haven't given up completely, but the options on this bill are limited,'' Durbin said.
"I'm disappointed for thousands of young people whose lives are just in limbo," he added. "They want to move on with their lives and do good things, and unfortunately we haven't been able to pass the laws to make that happen."
Immigrant-rights advocates were dismayed by the setback but vowed to find other means to pass the legislation, which they have sought since 2001.
"There is no question that this issue doesn't stop here," said Cecilia Muñoz, senior vice president of the National Council of La Raza. "The longer we wait, the more talented young people we close the door of opportunity to."
The DREAM Act would allow illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, and have lived here at least five years, to receive conditional legal status if they have graduated from high school and have a clean record. After six years, they could become permanent legal residents if they serve in the U.S. military for at least two years or complete at least two years of college. As with most green card holders, they could apply for citizenship after five years.

I’m so glad to hear this! My hope has been renewed!
If I’m not mistaken, I think (from listening to talk radio with one ear) this bill had a provision which allows these kids to get in-state tuition rates. So a kid who is a legal resident of say, Ohio, goes to a PA state school for what, at least double what a resident of PA pays. But a kid who is a legal resident of Mexico gets the in-state rate.
Lots of schools do this already, unfortunately
Not only the bill is sponsored by a racist group who advocates the overthrow of parts of the US....but it is inheritinely unconstitutional
You cant give special benefits based on ethnic status (illegals) to one group and not another. The 14th Amendment actually comes in handy here
Also, real International students pay huge $$ to US colleges. Not only they pay out-of-state tutiton...but also have health insurance and are limited to 19 hrs work at a school per week. You know if the DREAM act passed the Intl students will try to use the DREAM act for their benefit (or else sue)
Thanks for posting all those links. Have you heard that now we are using Mexico’s curriculum to teach these students in OUR schools? It’s getting more and more ridiculous!
I’ve always dreamed this wouldn’t pass.

File photo The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so courses will be valid in both countries. Why is the word ILLEGAL so difficult for Durbin to understand. I guess when you’re in the Democrat Party ILLEGAL is the status quo.
If this nightmare did a fade-to-black it would be just fine with me.
The ONLY illegals I would consider for citizenship would be those who did combat duty.
The best hope is for them and their parents to return to mexico.
Thanks CB
Always good to hear from you.
I thought Mexicans were caucasian. That could only mean... gasp... LaRaza's a white power group! Good Lord, where's Al and Je$$e?
Somebody ought to hang that no good pos. He’s been in bed with La Raza from the beginning. He was the one who encouraged Mexicans to fly their flag in the first march last year. He’s sold Americans out. I rate him right up there with that snake, Lindsey Graham.
“Amnesty III may be dead, but Amnesty IV will be around the corner. These traitors will never give up!”
Beck just did a good hit piece on Shamnesty IV......
now when do we get Shamnesty XXXIV????
You’re right. The Donks will try again and again and again and...
IMHO, the only way to stop this treasonous give away of our country’s sovereignty is to elect a true conservative1 in 2008 and take back the House and Senate.
If the Repubs would pull their collective heads out of their collective asses this could be done. Won’t be easy, but it is doable.
Every day the RATS give the pubs tons of stuff to use in political ads and sound bites. And advertising is the way to get the message out. The LSM sure as Hell ain’t gonna help.
But the LSM, being in trouble itself, is not gonna turn down advertising dollars.
Let’s go Pubs. Grow some cojones, produce some killer advertising, take it to the RATS and get it done!
1And that sure as heck ain't Rootie.
Not only that, but it was amnesty for all illegals willing to lie and say they came here before the age of 16, whether they did or not.
I’m glad amnesty is dead for the third time in a little over a year. But it’ll be back, again and agian. The Dems need the votes.
Because there are so many traitors in bed with them! That bed must be pretty doggone full by now since most of the US Senate is in it with them. LOL
It aint Rootie for sure ... Hmmmm ... how about Odd-Job-Ademigod?

World’s Largest Bed!!
Lol!
