Islamic headscarves ought to be banned at workplaces and in schools - that's the view of half the people surveyed in a new Swedish poll.
The poll, the third of its kind taken by Uppsala University to measure Swedes' views of diversity, shows a rising number of people supporting a headscarf ban.
In 2005, 43 percent wanted a ban on Islamic female head coverings. This year, 49.8 percent of the 1,065 people asked supported a ban.
The results the poll are open to some interpretation. The questionnaire asked people for their view on the banning of the 'slöja' or veil, indicating a garment covering the face as well as the top of the head, such as a burqa or a niqab. However, in common parlance, the word 'slöja' is often used to describe all sorts of female Islamic head coverings, including those that just cover the hair.
Hardening attitudes on the headscarf question were not the only sign of deteriorating race relations. More than one in three of those asked said they agreed with the statement that "many foreigners come to Sweden simply to take advantage of our social welfare."
On a more positive note, 80 percent of people said they had good experiences of contact with people of foreign origins. According to the study's authors only 5 percent have "extremely negative views" of immigrants - around the same percentage as last year, but higher than in 2005.
"There could be a link to how well the Sweden Democrats did in the last election - there are such tendencies in Sweden today," said Dr. Irving Palm, one of those behind the survey, to Svenska Dagbladet.

Only half. And the rest think anything is ok, they must tolerate anything. In time they will be replaced by people who tolerate nothing.
I guarantee that had we done so, we would have suffered many more attacks in the interim - as those Muslim citizens who have been quietly tipping off the FBI to future plots would have just said "Forget it - those bastards threw my cousin Hamid into a dungeon."
Why are so many FReepers anxious for America to act like the bad guy? The momentary spasm of ego-pleasure at watching the Arabs get rounded up would absolutely not have been worth the consequences that would have followed. I have plenty of bones to pick with GWB, but at least he gets that part of the equation.

My opinion here in the US is that they’re welcome here, but better realize that they conform to OUR culture, not the other way around. Also, we don’t look too kindly to things being blown up.

Non-western and mysogynistic third-world customs as well as virulent strains of Tuberculosis, Typhoid, Cholera, and Hemoragic fevers should be left at the door and not imported into the USA. Headscarves are the camels nose and start the downward spiral to multicultural chaos. They are banned in France, a country that tolerates everthing else for good reason.

- I think it ought to be up to the employer alternatively the school etc whether veils/headscarves should be allowed or not.
Just like I don’t believe in ‘banning’ religions, I don’t believe in banning religious symbols.
On the other hand, no Christian nation is obliged to receive thousands of refugees from Muslim countries if they feel it will not do anyone any good. Scandinavian countries like Finland and Iceland have chosen a different path than Sweden and in my eyes this does not make these nations racist or intolerant.
In the future, I think Europe should provide countries in the Mid East and Africa with proper resources for dealing with refugees from neighboring areas who are victims of persecution, armed conflicts, natural disasters etc instead of allowing them to settle in Europe. Such solutions have been suggested by several politicians, organizations and experts over here, but have so far mostly been ruled out as acts of ‘racism’.
The integration of secularized Muslims in Sweden, mainly people who came here during the war between Iraq and Iran, from Lebanon as well as the offspring of these asylum seekers, has been more or less successful. Females from these areas seldom veil themselves and they often drink alcohol and even eat pork. On the other hand, there are Muslims in Sweden who don’t wish to integrate at all. These people mostly come from Somalia and Sudan and some other North African countries. Women from this segment often veil themselves deliberately or are forced to do so. A peculiar circumstance is that upon arriving in Europe, most of them were NOT especially Muslim, but have started to isolate themselves and become very devout after A) failing to get jobs in Europe, B) having become easy prey for Saudi Arabian financed Muslim missionaries (discouraging them from mixing with ‘infidels’).
