They must of listened to Rush on Tuesday when he said that a long strike would prevent all of the ‘08 Democratic candidates from getting money from union dues.
Looks like the UAW gets $50,000,000,000 for retiree health care trust fund, and job security was a phrase used in getting workers fired up about a strike.

Negotiating for overly generous health benefits for union members has aided and abetted the decline of the auto industry. The “Big Three” collectively spent almost $10 billion on health insurance in 2002 and the UAW has heedlessly continued to waste money.
UAW’s Multimillion Dollar Resort
Union dues have subsidized the construction of an extraordinarily expensive resort and golf club retreat. The Black Lake Resort and Golf club is luxurious, to say the least. This lakeside resort has 241 guest rooms, 2 full-sized basketball courts, an Olympic size swimming pool, a full gym and exercise room with a sauna, and a golf course designed by Rees Jones, a pricey and well-known golf course architect.
While UAW union members are permitted to visit the resort their dues have paid for, they cannot do so at any significant discount—they only receive $18 off the regular price.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Top U.S. automaker General Motors Corp said on Wednesday that its landmark new contract with the United Auto Workers union including a health-care trust is subject to court and regulatory approval.
GM said in a statement that following ratification of the tentative deal by its 73,000 hourly workers, who have been on strike since Monday, the U.S. Security and Exchanges Commission will conduct a review of the accounting of the agreement.
The automaker said the deal includes a health-care trust for retirees that will improve competitiveness at the struggling company.
About 725 UAW Officers & Employees make over $100,000 in total compensation, guessing they didn’t want their bottom to fall out.

In 76 when they struck there were some 400,000 workers. 76,000 is a suprising number. Where did they all go and why do cars still cost so much? I know why but it’s fun to ask.

No more than you, but I don’t think the deal is going to be very sweet considering what GM had originally planned to do. Look for paying 35% of health care costs, taking a substantial wage cut and other fun concessions.
A job, however, is a job and I’d be happy if there was work.
