The Ugly Side of the G.O.P. (40 years of insulting, disenfranchising black Americans)
The New York Times ^ | September 25, 2007 | BOB HERBERT

I applaud the thousands of people, many of them poor, who traveled from around the country to protest in Jena, La., last week. But what I’d really like to see is a million angry protesters marching on the headquarters of the National Republican Party in Washington. Enough is enough. Last week the Republicans showed once again just how anti-black their party really is.

The G.O.P. has spent the last 40 years insulting, disenfranchising and otherwise stomping on the interests of black Americans. Last week, the residents of Washington, D.C., with its majority black population, came remarkably close to realizing a goal they have sought for decades — a voting member of Congress to represent them.

A majority in Congress favored the move, and the House had already approved it. But the Republican minority in the Senate — with the enthusiastic support of President Bush — rose up on Tuesday and said: “No way, baby.”

At least 57 senators favored the bill, a solid majority. But the Republicans prevented a key motion on the measure from receiving the 60 votes necessary to move it forward in the Senate. The bill died.

At the same time that the Republicans were killing Congressional representation for D.C. residents, the major G.O.P. candidates for president were offering a collective slap in the face to black voters nationally by refusing to participate in a long-scheduled, nationally televised debate focusing on issues important to minorities.

The radio and television personality Tavis Smiley worked for a year to have a pair of these debates televised on PBS, one for the Democratic candidates and the other for the Republicans. The Democratic debate was held in June, and all the major candidates participated.

What a total CROCK.
I guess freeing them from slavery, telling them they are bright, intelligent people who can accomplish anything they want is not good enough.
Unlike the dems who treat them like they are still on a plantation needing to be taken care of as children is more appealing.

40 years hmmmm? Conveniently, that cuts out the integration of the schools and the Civil Rights Act, both of which were primarily supported by Republicans and opposed by Democrats. Very disingenuous.

I’d like to see six people charged with assault and battery go to prison and get rehabilitated. I’d also like to see “black America” stop making excuses for their situation.

The author lives in a bizarre fantasy world.

And a hate filled fantasy world at that.

Should a population which is an ongoing, deeply entrenched net accounts payable of the federal government even be entitled to representation?

Here is a man (immature to be sure)who understands nothing about how entitlement, welfare generations and affirmative action is scourge keeping the black man down. Of course you would need to have more than emotion guiding you to realize this.

I want $100 million, a mansion overlooking the ocean and private jet. This is a goal I have had for decades. How dare Congress not give it to me.

BS Bob. Black and white has nothing to do with this, other than the black and white of the ink on the paper of the US Constitution. If the black residents of Washington DC don't like their lack of representation in the house of representatives, they are more than welcome to move to one of the states. The District of Columbia is not a state, and unless you want to convince 3/4 of the states to ratify an amendment to the Constitution, it is not permitted to have a representative in the House.

Hey B-—ch! If it were’nt for the GOP, the 64 Civil Rights Act would have never passed. You know why? Your precious party of Sheets Byrd kept filibustering the thing.

You might wanna rethink that whole “disenfranchisement” thing — oops, my bad homey — you have been trained your whole life to think D=Good, R=KKK=Bad and you can’t really think anymore can you?

Usually it’s the people shrieking the loudest and doing the majority of the finger pointing that are the most guilty.
