Duncan Hunter, the Congressman from California, joined other Republican Presidential candidates over the weekend in condemning the upcoming address to Columbia University by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
But Hunter went a step further by pledging that if the speech goes forth he will introduce legislation in Congress to cut off federal assistance from the University. All federal assistance. This would presumably include research and scientific grants for the sciences and medical school.
"If the left-wingers of academia will not support our troops, they, in the very least, should not support our adversaries," Hunter said in a statement accompanying a warning letter he wrote to Lee Bollinger, the president of Columbia.
Bollinger has tried to meet the mounting criticism from Republican politicians head-on.
In a statement on the school's website on September 19th, Bollinger announced that he would introduce the Iranian President with a rebuke to Iran's treatment of women and its stance toward Israel and Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust.
Bollinter went on to say in the statement that hearing all ideas, no matter how "odious" is one of the basic tenets of a full education.
"I would also like to invoke a major theme in the development of freedom of speech as a central value in our society," Bollinger wrote. "It should never be thought that merely to listen to ideas we deplore in any way implies our endorsement of those ideas, or the weakness of our resolve to resist those ideas or our naiveté about the very real dangers inherent in such ideas. It is a critical premise of freedom of speech that we do not honor the dishonorable when we open the public forum to their voices. To hold otherwise would make vigorous debate impossible."
The threat of cutting off federal funds is something the government and Congress have used before when law schools tried to keep JAG lawyers from recruiting on campuses because the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy discriminates against gays, violating university nondiscrimination policies.
The government won the argument in March 2005, when the Supreme Court upheld the so-called Solomon Amendment, a 1996 measure that allowed the government to tie federal funding to military and ROTC recruiting. It is unclear if that law would be applicable in the case of the Ahmadinejad speech, which has nothing to do with military recruiting.
Hunter says the speech and the recent "General Betrayus" Moveon.org ad are emblematic of the emergence of the "extreme left wing."
"Columbia University's hosting of Ahmadinejad is a slap in the face of every one of the 165,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq. As he speaks, his agents will be moving roadside bombs onto the battlefield to be used against America's military men and women," Hunter wrote
My guess is that he will speak dispargingly of the Bush administration. Academia will eat it up as they and Ahmadinejad share the same mind.
Translation: The Democrats are 100% supportive of this visit.
Hey ups! Could be MoveOn.org set this up. Duncan Hunter is the best foil we have to either MOO or Fascist Islam.
GO DUNCAN HUNTER! Ever vigilant!

“Could be MoveOn.org set this up”
That could be, didn’t someone mention that George Soros has something to do with Columbia University? Maybe Calpernia?
Regardless, MoveOn.org, Democrat party, means the same thing. Have the Democrats denounced this appearance?
No matter, Duncan Hunter is the one we need to take on these evil people.
***Ahmadinejad will either “moon” American academia***
LOL!!!
I find this amazingly humorous since the moon is their “god.”
;^)
>>>Why else would he be speaking at Columbia at all?
Well, I couldn’t help but think about....
George Soros is on the Advisory Board at Columbia U:

And Kian Tajbakhsh, who was just released from an Iranian prison, got his PhD from Columbia University; also works with George Soros Open Society Institute.

That is just on the surface. I can’t help but wonder how deep the ties go.
Duncan Hunter is the only one who has responded properly to this unmitigated obscenity. The others can posture all they want, Hunter is going to hit those dhimmis in the wallet! Yahoo!
If and when a real leader should show up in the White House, people will quickly realize what a hollow shell Bush has been. The lack of strong leadership is a cancer upon America, a curse. Ahmadinejad knows this, and he rubs our faces in it.
Bush, you would be held up as a great AMERICAN leader, a true hero, if you would only have disapproved this terrorist leader's visa. You could have said: "enough, I do not want this man on our soil. Iran has been declared a terrorist state and Ahmadinejad leads it. He is responsible for killing hundreds of our troops. If this man, who spits in the face of the United Nations' decrees to open up his nuclear facilities to inspection, who threatens Israel with nuclear annhilation, who directly supports Hizbollah with money, weapons and training, who kidnapped 13 British Royal Marines on the open seas and held them against international rules of war, who supplies EFPs that kill and maim our troops, if he wants to come to America he will come as our enemy and the enemy of the world, and he will be arrested".
But alas, I dream. Bush sees America only as a small part of a greater thing, a part of the WORLD which he seeks to unite in an economic enmeshment that will ensure that borders, culture and language mean nothing. Yes, I know it's not just Bush, it's our Senate, House, Judiciary and our entire heirarchical structure of leadership. Our very culture has become effeminate, we are castrated by political correctness, anti-religion, multiculturalism and feminism. We have abbrogated our Christian history and traditions and have subordinated them to personal 'rights' which our Constitution never intended, 'rights' like abortion, pornography, homosexual marriage, financial incentives for sexual deviants who co-habitate, unconcionable taxation, extended rights to illegal aliens, and the non-existent 'Seperation Clause', which has all but destroyed the Christian faith that our country was founded and built upon. The pillars are crumbling, our collective souls have been sold out to the anteists, communists, deists, Darwinists and anarchists, in exchange for self indulgent 'personal rights', including the right of illimitable "free speech", which perversely permits the evilist man on earth, Achmad Amadinejad, to stand and speak right where his psychophant ilk murdered 3,000 innocent Americans, in New York City.
It is no wonder that evil bastards like Ahmadinejad can come here and spout their twisted ideology in our cities, and in our universities. They are our sworn enemies, they know our 'freedom of speech' concept has opened the doors of Hell and allows evil to prey upon our people, our society, our souls. So they come here like arrogant conquerors, which in a sense they are. Dear God, PLEASE grant us some strong leaders, religious and secular, who will lead us out of this deathtrap of exessive "freedom" that we're mired in.
bump
That is that the blocking of access to military recruiters on campus is a condition of government grants.
This is not being applied.
Free speech, as in the preamble of the Constitution, applies ONLY to American citizens, so I’ve heard.
Free speech, as in the preamble of the Constitution, applies ONLY to American citizens, so I’ve heard.
Free speech, as in the preamble of the Constitution, applies ONLY to American citizens, so I’ve heard.
Then why do they allow millions of illegal aliens to gather and protest on our streets, yet arrest Americans with impunity who dare to protest at an abortion clinic? Why does our State Department allow our most terrible enemy, (and the bitter enemy of Isreal and the entire Middle east), Achmad Ahamdinejad, to come to New York City and to our universities to spew his hateful, perveted idiology? Your contention that our constitutional freedom of speech applies only to Americans is correct, but what good is a constitution if it's not followed? It is only a piece of rotting paper to most in our government.

Will be blogging the event at Columbia!
Good job, Hunter!
You are so sadly correct. The gubmint is working under a different flag today. It is not the flag of the stars and stripes, but the rag of the arm and sickle. There are schools in Washington State which do not permit our sacred documents to be displayed on their walls!
If anyone thinks we still live in the U.S.A., we have another think coming. How many more insults must the government throw in our faces before we recognize that fact?
