Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began his speech at Columbia University by saying that criticism from University President Lee Bollinger was an insult to the audience. Bollinger had told Ahmadinejad he exhibits “all the signs of a petty, cruel dictator.”

Shocked that Bollinger did not greet the Iranian leader with “open arms.” Seems to be more ballsy than the 60 Minutes reporter.

Bollinger is invoking a little CYA. He is worried about alumni contributions and other actions that could cut funding to the school. By his show of bravado, he is making Ahmadinejad look like the victim. If you invite someone to speak as the college president, you need to add gratuitous insults. Ahmadinejad should not have been invited in the first place. Now Bollinger is making him look good.
