Groups Protest Ahmadinejad

Organized protests against the appearance of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the U.N. began even before he arrived in New York City.

A group of about 40 elected officials and civic leaders gathered Sunday outside Columbia University, where Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak on Monday.

Some carried placards with slogans such as "Don't give a platform to hate," and "Go to hell," while denouncing Ahmadinejad as a "Hitler wannabe" and a Holocaust denier.

Said New York state Assemblyman Dov Hikind: "There is no excuse to invite this madman, this little Hitler. "This is immoral. This is outrageous. This is sick. Do we have to invite him into our community? ... There is absolutely no justification."

Added city Councilman David Weprin: "This invitation is a slap in the face to all New Yorkers and especially to those families who lost loved ones on Sept. 11 right here in New York City."

Among the protests scheduled:

• A noon rally across the street from the U.N. led by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the Jewish Community Relations, in cooperation with the United Jewish Communities, the UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. Speakers include Debra Burlingame, sister of Charles F. "Chic" Burlingame III, pilot of American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11.

• A rally outside Columbia University from 1 to 3 p.m. By students from Columbia and other universities including Rutgers, Brooklyn College and Queens College, area high school students and dozens of Jewish organizations all outraged by the appearance of Ahmadinejad.

• Demonstration outside of Washington's National Press Building protesting Ahmadinejad's video linked speech at a luncheon at National Press Club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I’m surprised that some think we are bound to follow “UN rules” even if letting an enemy whom we are at war with have free reign to not only visit our country but take a sightseeing & propaganda tour while they are here.

If we choose to follow a UN rule so be it. But I question the constitutionality of us being bound by any rule or law of a foreign country or group of foreign country. I’m sure these rules are part of a treaty we signed. But treaties are broken all the time. And if the national security of one’s own country is involved I can see no better reason for breaking it. The president could have stopped this and did not.

Also, did he bring his own driver and limo? Is he sleeping on a sofa in the UN? Don’t forget that some hotel offered him lodging, some restaurant is allowing him to eat there and some American is driving a limo with him in it. I can only assume that those Americans offering him food, lodging and transportation have the option to refuse to do so and have not.

Update: 1:35pm Eastern Hundreds counterprotest at Columbia

Outside Columbia University at the Stand with Us/Hasbarah protest, approx. 1:00pm Eastern.

Update 1:35pm Eastern. There are several hundred counterprotesters outside the Columbia gates, mostly Jewish organizations and some brave Persian dissidents. I’ve talked to rabbis, young families, students, alumni. Most are livid that Columbia has penned them off campus. There are busloads of kids here, but many older folks are disappointed that the turnout isn’t higher. This may be because lots of people turned out for the anti-Mahmoud rally at the U.N. Organizers expect many of them to head over here.

We’re going to try to do a livestream from the protest. Meantime, a few more photos:
