FORT BRAGG, N.C., Sept. 17 — From his position about 100 yards away, Master Sgt. Troy Anderson had a clear shot at the Afghan man standing outside a residential compound in a village near the Pakistan border last October. When Capt. Dave Staffel, the Special Forces officer in charge, gave the order to shoot, Sergeant Anderson fired a bullet into the man’s head, killing him.

There is so much to say about a story like this.....the only thing to say is that the USA is probably in it's last days.

First off, it’s in the NYTimes, so I don’t believe a word except the date. 2nd, if you’re basing the US’s history on anything the Times tells you, then perhaps YOU are in your last days. Know what I mean?

1. The story is actually pretty good: it gives the relevant facts and does not appear to take sides.

2. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with hearings like this. On balance, I think it's probably better to have them than not, as a measure of accountability for the use of deadly force in what was essentially an assassination. If the facts are as reported in the story, the Green Berets have nothing to worry about.

I love the release of Green Beret’s names in this article. Why not just put up their SS numbers, addresses, kid’s schools, and telephone numbers too? Hell Haji needs a little help to find them and kill them, thanks to the NYTiimes. You guys are so protective of the military.

Would this mean that if a soldier killed an unarmed Osama bin Laden, he could charged with murder?

Um, no I'm using just history. I seem to remember hearing something about the Great Republic of Rome falling. We're pretty much on the same path of decline.

Nothing wrong with being charged with murder for doing your job. After all, you might be found innocent after 6 months of hell. If so, I’m sure they’ll be anxious to put their lives on the line, once again, for such a grateful country.

1. Doesn't take sides? How about just the title? The man killed was a known hunted terrorist and the NYT labels him first as a "suspect" then 2nd as just "Mr. Buntangyar"....... give me a break

2. Except that there will be new laws/rules/regulations/ROEs for all SPECOPS now and there will be a greater chance that terrorists will not be killed when we do have the shot.

If you want to lose your country in a hurry, just let lawyers run the military in a time of war.

How profoundly pathetic.

It is very obvious from all I have read about this, and listened to on T.V., and in discussions with a friend who is a sniper in Special Forces, that Gen. Kearney is either scared of his job, or is a damned poor commander of his troops and should be fired. When the CID (Army Criminal Investigations)signs off on any shooting, I know for a fact it has been “vetted” and confirmed. For a commander to order charges brought anyway shows me who has their head up their a$$, and it ain’t the Captain and Sergeant involved in this case. Kearney has to go!

It’s FN hilarious the way these bozos send their soldiers to war and then turn around and charge the soldiers with murder. ROTFLMAO!!!! That’s not how to win wars!!!! FN America! This country does not deserve the men and women who serve in their military.

Get a grip.

On what exactly? let me know when you aren't a "sheeple" and have a voice with our government.

I at least recognize our demise.......you can go on and keep believing just little ol' you and I can make a difference. It's worked so well the past 15 years or so. Seriously look how much better the USA is now than when our grandparents were our age.

You're not really going to give them a free pass on the ground of "chust following oahdahs....?"

I'm not accusing these guys of anything -- it sounds like they did the right thing.

But ... on balance ... it is better for a variety of reasons that inquiries like this can happen. Imagine if actions like this were never investigated.

Did you read the story? If not, you should: the facts presented there indicate that the soldiers should be exonerated.
