Scandinavia has been rated as the best place to live, that’s according to a ranking by Reader’s Digest.
Using a range of environmental and social indicators based in part on the UN’s Human Development Index, the survey rates countries on care of the environment and quality of life for their citizens.
Finland tops the 141-nation list, followed by Nordic neighbours Iceland and Norway, with Sweden coming in at fourth place.
And the Swedish capital comes top of the Reader’s Digest ranking of 72 world cities when it comes to quality of life.
Cities were rated according to quality of public transport, parks, air quality and waste recycling.
After top placed Stockholm came Norwegian capital Oslo, and Munich was in third place.

As far as Sweeden and Scandinavia being the best place to live, I have one word: Lutefisk!
- Prices and income taxes in Scandinavia aren’t that high anymore.
Perhaps both Scandinavians and US citizens enjoy an exceptionally high standard of living?
I’ve been around the world to a certain extent. I know what I’m talking about.
Scandinavians live even better than the Swiss. Many ordinary families in Sweden often own two houses and the BMW/Volvo/Audi/MB as well.

My wife’s family is Swedish.

Well, if the writer considers those characteristics the most important elements of a great place to live, his list is irrelevant for me and probably most of the other posters on FreeRepublic.

- Although ignorant people in both our parts of the world aren’t aware of it, there are very strong ties between Scandinavia and the US.
Above all, the Western World today is in a state where more of collaboration and genuine communication is needed.

They left out monthly income out of consideration.
The got the answer they wanted by using faulty metrics. Of those three only air quality directly effects the quality of life. Capability to travel effects quality of life; public transportation is a single means to that end but there are other ways to achieve it. Again, recycling is a means, but the end is that discarded materials go away and not negatively the locations people live.
I nhave lived all over Europe for a total of 31 years. The cost of living in Iceland and Norway is incredible. Taxes are still enormeous compared to the US

For Americans that haven’t made the road-trip to Minnesota or Wisconsin...
or stumbled across a gem like Lindsborg, Kansas...
they are fairly clueless.
It’s a natural outcome of the declining public education system of the
USA.
And lack of travel outside their own pleasure domes.

Yet, I still wish to point out that even though the Scandinavian work force is very Socialist, most Scandinavians laborers have high work ethics and are much better educated than workers of other many other nations.
I see what you mean.
A normally intelligent person in the US will, by working hard, soon aquire a very good standard of living. In many parts of Europe this is much harder (because working hard means you’re supporting Capitalism).
While Scandinavians admire the Southern Europeans from many perspectives, we Northerners think the European Union is in for some major reshaping.
Germany and France will listen to us.
The Eu’s downfall will be the fact that it demands to rule from the top down by unelected Kommissars.
The states rights will go out of the window. In the US it is exactly the opposite. States rights will always dominate.

I’ve participated in building Volvo XC90’s, XC70’s, S80’s and such cars. Best working life experience I’ve ever had.
