Boy Drowned As Officers Watched
Updated: 15:31, Friday September 21, 2007
The parents of a young boy who drowned in a pond have hit out at community support officers who stood by and witnessed the incident without acting.
Tracy Lyon and Anthony Ganderton say they do not accept the officers' explanation that they were not trained to deal with the situation.
The officers were sent to the beauty spot in Wigan, Greater Manchester after reports that two children had got into difficulty.
Jordon Lyon, 10, had jumped into the water to help his eight-year-old stepsister Bethany.
Two fishermen were able to rescue Bethany but her stepbrother became submerged.
When Jordon's stepfather and a friend rushed to the scene they saw the police community support officers (PCSOs) standing at the side of the pond, an inquest heard.
The two men jumped into the water at John Taylor's Pit and were later joined by a uniformed officer.
Jordon was eventually pulled from the water but was later pronounced dead in hospital.
His mother, Tracy Lyon, and stepfather Anthony Ganderton, said they could not understand why the PCSOs did not act or why they did not give evidence at the inquest.
Mr Ganderton told the inquest: "I don't know why they didn't go in. I can't understand it.
"If I had been walking along a canal and seen a child drowning I would have jumped in.
"You don't have to be trained to jump in after a drowning child."
In a statement after the hearing, Detective Chief Inspector Phil Owen, of Wigan CID, said: "PCSOs are not trained to deal with major incidents such as this.
"Both ourselves and the fire brigade regularly warn the public of the dangers of going into unknown stretches of water so it would have been inappropriate for PCSOs, who are not trained in water rescue, to enter the pond.
"This was a tragic incident where a young boy lost his life and we would once again want to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Jordon's family."
A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
Simply beyond belief.
Manslaughter anyone?
Could they swim?
Bingo.
That's a good way to get yourself drowned too.
“To Protect and Serve”......I’ve made my opinions on modern law enforcement well known over the last week - with all the incidences of tasering grandmas, arresting old women who didn’t water their lawn...etc....I guess now you need “special” training on how to save children from ponds. Maybe they need to spend more time learning how to protect and serve and less time on the shooting range or popping people with tasers for a good time...I still say 90% of them are nothing but “thugs” with badges on....
Felony neglect!
Firstly, God bless the child and Lord have mercy and comfort the family.
Maybe i’m missing something... Where was the mother during this? Who called in, the fisherman or the mom? Did she jump in first?
“Both ourselves and the fire brigade regularly warn the public of the dangers of going into unknown stretches of water so it would have been inappropriate for PCSOs, who are not trained in water rescue, to enter the pond.
If its ‘unknown’ how did it come to have a well known Name?
Is it me, or does this make no sense at all coming from the cops?
I know I’m gonna get slammed for this, but....where were the parents when the kids went swimming? But, on the other hand, I would’ve jumped in and tried to save him. And I’m not a good swimmer. It’s important to know where your kids are, and what they’re doing, especially at that age.
Yep.
Better to wait the 15 minutes for “trained” responders or the hour and a half for the recovery team.
But, you’re right.
Many people have drowned trying to save others.
They’re called “heroes”.
I can’t imagine what these two officers feel like or what they’ll be called.
You asked the question I was thinking.
For a great number of people it would be no problem jumping in and pulling the child out. A weak or poor swimmer with cloths on would have only added to the deaths.
But with that said was there any thing laying around that might have helped rescue the child? Then it would become a case of the officer’s training.
This is what comes from depending on the Givernment (sic) for anything.
I’m don’t believe the parents knew they were swimming.
We're afraid that we're going to be accused of being a child molester.
I'm a leader in my son's Boy Scout Troop and we have to have at least 2 adults at every activity to stay out of danger of false accusations.
If these two "cowards" had tried to help and failed, they may have gotten into even more trouble.
With all that being said, I still would have jumped in to save the child. That's human nature, or it used to be.
Sadly, you can’t train somebody in the right thing to do when they’re an adult.
These guys should be fired.
Gotta love a bureaucratic state of being. /sarc>
True. That's why people call them "heroes".
That’s exactly what this poor boy did, he jumped in to save his stepsister. At aged 10 yrs., he showed more courage than those two cops. Shame on them, I hope they are charged with negligent manslaughter.
Instead of PCOs, probably POSs.
