DOVER, Del. - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day. A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

classes cancelled. At least someone learned something from the last time a murder took place on a college.

Two differences:

1) Deleware State has 3600 students, the size of a large high school. Virginia Tech has 28,000 students, the size of a small city.

2) The Deleware State shootings happened at 1:30am, with time to react before the day started. The first Virginia Tech shootings took place around 7:00am, with the people already arriving on campus for the day.

Captain I agree with you the circumstances were very different, but it is still good to see that they had enough sense to cancel classes until they sorted out some of the facts.

You think wrong.........the reference in regard to Dover Downs is for location reference and an indication of what the local police have to deal with this weeked, besides this trajedy.

So the previous sentence mentioning it was a black collage was written for the same reasons? To give location and what the police had to deal with? Why were the two sentences placed in juxtaposition if the author had no intention of connecting the two? He should have started a new paragraph if he was changing the subject to location.

The article linked has changed drastically since my first post. This is not the same article I was posting to.

People know where the track is, they don't necessarily know where DelState is located.

There is a byline to the story and people do know where Dover is. Local landmarks are not necessary. Who cares if it is across the street from the race track or from McDonald's.

Truth is, if all these moonshine-drinking, gun-loving, rednecks had brought their guns with them, the perpetrator would have been hung up in a tree for target practice!

Did you ever bother thinking the reporter had nothing to do with the editing of the copy???

The article has changed as the local folk have placed updates --- you got a problem with that? I know I sure don't.

Who cares if it is across the street from the race track or from McDonald's.

Apparently those who wish to make this a racial issue..........

Put Chief Moose on the case. He’ll find the white guys who are responsible.

Less than 15 minutes away from mine too. I had to run to the Mall today - totally amazed by the news crews w/satellites standing around in front of Best Buys, just watching the front of the campus this morning.

My first thought was ‘Just what local LEOs need on top of race weekend’...... like this weekend isn’t already crazy enough with that.

I agree. Add to that the fact that they’re trying to link what happened at Virgina Tech and this situation, two shootins on college campuses.

Mostly for Dover it’s either NASCAR or DAFB.

ShootinGs. Not shootins.

Wouldn’t want to be confused with the redneck, racist, DD crowd ;)

I was just adding my 2 cents having been to several Pocono races. I loved it since the first time we ever went. We stopped for a year or two, got old (us and going!), then we went to this past June’s race and wouldn’t ya know it, it rained! We left before they restarted after the second (or was it the third) time it rained. Of course it got sunny on the ride home! It did rain again I believe and they ended the race early.

We went to our first race, Pocono 1993, right after Davey Allison died. Too many up there in Nascar heaven. Dale Sr. was our driver. Now like many we follow Junior (although we did before Sr. died) and will stick with him in the “88” with Hendrick (hard as that is not being overly fond of Gordon & Johnson, they are good, have to give them that I guess, lol!)

That’s something about Richard, hopefully he doesn’t do that any more since he’s aged some since then! Losing Adam was such a shame, he had the magic more than Kyle I think, but I also think he was too young to go into Cup racing. But he, Kenny Irwin, Neal Bonnett, and Dale Sr. would probably still be here if the head and neck restraint had been used way earlier.

Have you ever seen the pictures of the White Klan in the 20s and 30s? They were protesting to have the right to kick blacks around.

Today the Black Klan is protesting to have the right to kick the crap out of whites.

Yes, they are violent and they are thugs.

What I don’t understand is...why are the Po-lice so afraid of giving a description of the (I assume male) shooter? We all know that it’s a mostly black school, right? So, we can assume that (if it’s a student) that it is likely a black shooter, just by the percentage of blacks in attendance. If the victim who can talk refuses to “give up” the shooter, why not use other methods (sodium pentothal?) to get it out of him?? I know, he’s shot in the ankle, but the right amount of pentathol can really get those lips to talkin’! Just ask the Germans...I truly believe that they already KNOW the identity of the shooter. Then WHY wouldn’t they release it as this would certainly aid in his capture?

"No danger!" -- Delaware State Dean on FNC

Translation: "It's cultural"

Although they have been eased somewhat in recent years, getting a concealed carry permit in Delaware has been a historically complicated process.

Not to mention, you still can't carry anywhere near a school or college. Can't carry here, can't carry there, why carry anywhere if the places you can't carry may be the places you need to carry the most. The laws are dumb!

.

The Dean, a student “gov” rep, and one other person on FNC were just babbling CYA BS -

Six hoods in AL attack and beat a student unconscious and leave him that way - They are the victims!

They are setting themselves back to pre-1840

And now people are yawning and not even seeing or talking to them

“Culture”
