DOVER, Del. - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day. A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

“And with DelState directly across from Dover Downs, this has got to be a worst case scneario nightmare for DoverPD.”
Yes, DSP and DPD are out in full force!
“The national media being in Dover for the race is really the only reason this is getting coverage outside the immediate area.”
I agree.
There are regular shootings and stabbings at DSU.
It has never drawn “National” attention before.
Fox News reported the FBI will be assisting. I haven’t heard a reason why, just that they are.
Is the campus a gun free zone?
Cynic that he is, my husband said if they had left the Apollo Club alone the shooter would have been easy to find. The closing of that place has always been a bone of contention with him.
''It was a very peaceful, very nice rally, very positive,'' Holmes said, adding there was no reason to believe the rally was connected to the shootings.
Then why mention it?
It's the NYT, what do you expect? Under the circumstances Carlos gave the best possible answer. Under other circumstances, I would venture a guess Carlos would have had an entirely different response.
Remember, at that early hour this morning a lot of the national media present were sports and fluff news writers/reporters there for race weekend, not a shooting and possible manhunt.
Yeah. Gotta get that propaganda in there. ;)
Did you notice the NASCAR statement comes directly after this sentence: A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students...
I think that the writer, Mr. Randall Chase either has high hopes of a redneck killer and thus a big news story or he has been following the Jena Six story too closely.
and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious
As if any gunshot wound is not.
Is that some kind of new language, code, or were you 'asleep at the wheel?' LOL!
"It was a very peaceful, very nice rally, very positive," Holmes said. There was no reason to believe the rally was connected to the shootings, but Holmes contrasted the atmosphere of the event with the attack, saying, "It's kind of shocking that this happened afterwards."
What a coincidence. A rally to support thugs results in a shooting?
I'm surprised the rally was even mentioned in the news story.
The Director of Campus Communications just held a news conference. He said “We hope he’s gone” when asked if the shooter had been apprehended and said the campus was still locked-down 13 hours after the shooting, preventing students from leaving. This is the nexus of Leftism: when someone shoots at you you cower and wait for them to leave.
Why are none of the news outlets, including FOX, giving a description of the shooter on the loose?
The latest is that one student, who was shot in the ankle, is refusing to give info to the police (leading them to think he knows the shooter).
Two students are said by police to be ‘persons of interest’.
All still early though, with some speculation.
You think wrong.........the reference in regard to Dover Downs is for location reference and an indication of what the local police have to deal with this weeked, besides this trajedy.
This only became national news because of all the national news outlets in Dover because it is raceweekend. People know where the track is, they don't necessarily know where DelState is located.
The sound is GREAT, if you’re a Nascar fan as I am. Have only gone to races at Pocono, loved every one! (Go DALE JR.!!)
Thank you for the info.
I have nothing against NASCAR, and always watch part of the races at Dover, but attending them has never interested me.
Dover was the first race held after 9/11/01.......I didn’t need the TV on to hear the crowd roar when Lee Greenwood finished singing and in fact I muted the TV so I could actuallly hear it........
BTW - I’m a Petty team fan. Richard was drunker than a hoot owl in the club I was in the night I met my husband....Race weekend June 1988.
Absolutely --- which totally blows away the idiocy of anything to do with the "redneck race crowd" across the highway.
The most recent I've heard is that they have a location for one of "persons of interest."
