Ortega said his fear of being deported to Mexico intensified within the past three months as immigration officials became more visible on the streets and the incidents of deportation of his acquaintances increased.
When his American neighbour threatened to report him to authorities, he told his family to pack-up. They simply couldn't risk returning to Mexico, where he says he fears the powerful drug cartels, corrupt government and poor living conditions.
"We don't have a future in Mexico," Ortega's 36-year-old wife said, noting her brother and his family also fled to Windsor fearing deportation. "We can't go back."
After driving his 1996 Grand Caravan for 24 hours without stopping -- except for gas and food -- the Ortegas arrived at the Windsor tunnel Sept. 11. When they told the border guard they were seeking refugee status, the Ortegas were given a list of social services organizations to contact for support.Ping.
Ike must be smiling down on us.
Well, I am sure Canada was stolen from Mexico too ya know.

Perhaps we should learn the word “revolution” in Spanish and keep repeating it to these folks. They should try it sometimes. Worked here a few hundred years ago, and it appears that it may have to work again in the US, let alone Mexico.
I think not.
"Welfare currently pays up to $548 per month for individuals and $1,193 for families with two children under the age of 13. As he recounted his story, Ortega repeatedly stressed his thanks to social services for helping his family. "Social services, they help us too much," he said. "I want to say thanks and to Canadians 'thanks.'"
He doesnt want to return to Los Angeles either...as it is just like Mexico now. They brought the drug cartels, the gangs, tagged the place to hell, trash all over the roads, etc.
This suggests a great idea: someone should print up wallet-sized cards and matchbooks, etc. with brief info (in Spanish) extolling the welfare services of Canada, proclaiming an imminent crackdown in the USA, brief instructions on getting to Canada, etc. Distribute them as widely as possible at places where illegals gather. Let Canada experience the 1st million or two of illegal migration north and we’ll hear shrieks from socialist liberals like we never imagined, as they discover that their socialist paradise is being overrun by illegals.
As a former Canadian living in So Cal, LOLOLOL!!
Vaya con dios.
Time the Great White North got a bit browner...perhaps the McKenzie brothers can learn to hose down tequilla in their Moose Milk now!

Pretty dismal, for sure.
(Sorry Canada!)
In Arizona, illegals are packing up the truck and heading south due to a statewide employer crackdown. The good news just keeps a comin’.
Isn’t that the truth. They claim they are fleeing Mexico, but they actually bring it with them and won’t let go!
All North America will be Mexico if this keeps up.
“He earned enough to buy a van and rent a house for his wife and three children.
He’s not going to be satisfied with that. He wants a nice house and a couple of cars, and knows how to find and keep a job. If he gets legal status, he will probably continue on the same road he followed in the US.
“”Welfare currently pays up to $548 per month for individuals and $1,193 for families with two children under the age of 13”
They heard about the freebies!!
They could take the train tunnel on the East Side of Detroit to Windsor and not be caught at all....
