Proof of cooperation between Iran and Syria in the proliferation and development of weapons of mass destruction was brought to light Monday in a Jane's Magazine report that dozens of Iranian engineers and 15 Syrian officers were killed in a July 23 accident in Syria.

According to the report, cited by Channel 10, the joint Syrian-Iranian team was attempting to mount a chemical warhead on a scud missile when the explosion occurred, spreading lethal chemical agents, including sarin nerve gas.

Reports of the accident were circulated at the time, however, no details were released by the Syrian government, and there were no hints of an Iranian connection.

The report comes on the heels of criticism leveled by the Syrains at the United States, accusing it of spreading "false" claims of Syrian nuclear activity and cooperation with North Korea to excuse an alleged Israeli air incursion over the country this month.

According to Global Security.org, Syria is not a signatory of either the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), - an international agreement banning the production, stockpiling or use of chemical weapons, or the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Syria began developing chemical weapons in 1973, just before the Yom Kipper War. Global Security.org cites the country as having one of the most advanced chemical weapons programs in the Middle East.

“You don’t load nerve gas, even binary forms, into a missle unless you are planning to use it in the near future.”

Worth saying twice. I hadn’t thought of that.

You know, with the constant drone of threats, its hard to tell.

I forgot about those though. You might have something there. There’s little doubt that its connected to the increased range of Israelii jet patrols and raids. Israel knows something is up.

This will be the lead story on CNN and NBC tonight????? Right??? Wrong.

The Arab world will condemn Syria and Iran for putting a chemical warhead on a scud??? Right??? Wrong.

Exactly. Israel just the other day made some sort of statement about believing that Syria has gotten a nuke with the material provided by North Korea. Sounds to me like Tel Aviv is prepping the world for a nuclear strike against Damascus. Anybody care to quote Isaiah 17?

So President Bush invaded the only country in the region that did not have WMDs?

Oh....that is an excellent bumper sticker!

Whoa, this is exactly the time period forecast last spring for the Syria/Israeli war. Wonder if this put the Syrians off their attack plan so they had to regroup? I was sure that we were going to see mushroom clouds above Damascus last summer!

Maybe Mossad had a helping hand in it. LOL

Maybe like that incident in 1982 when the CIA under William Casey let Soviet spies get their hands on rigged gas pipeline management software, resulting in the largest non-nuclear explosion ever observed from space.

I'd be satisfied if the Mossad just knows what's happening in Iran and Syria.

That would be fun. Though... don't we have that airborne laser up and flying now? That thing would probably make things go boom real nice.

You don't suppose... :-)

Who or what is Jane’s magazine? If it’s the rag I’m thinking of that publishes in America, frankly I’m very skeptical.

Maybe somebody can speak to the credibility of this original source.

I suspect that the reason neither Syria nor Israel wants to talk about the recent military action is because Iran has made a treaty to come to the aid of Syria in case of an attack by Israel. If Iran is not ready to act, they might insist that the attack not be made public.

Well, according to the report they were loading the warhead on to the missile.

Some how, I don't think safety was their biggest concern, such as stability, binary forms, *really* having to arm it 99.94% of the time for it to go off, etc.

Reminds me of the weapons officer for the Hiroshima destined bomb. The day before, he saw some B-29s crash on takeoff, and figured he'd change the plan from arming the bomb before it was loaded, to arming it in flight.

He had the unarmed bomb loaded, and practiced arming and disarming the bomb while it was in the closed bomb bay.
