Hillary Slayer ... (a battle Giuliani was born to fight)
American Spectator ^ | 9/17/2007 | Philip Klein

As one of his supporters, actor Robert Duvall, might say: Rudy played this one beautifully.

Last week, all Republican politicians worth their weight came out blasting MoveOn.org for taking out a full-page ad in the New York Times smearing Gen. David Petraeus on the day he was scheduled to deliver his Iraq progress report to Congress. The outrage among conservatives only grew as leading Democrats failed to condemn the ad, Hillary Clinton questioned the general's honesty, and it was disclosed that the far left group was given a drastically reduced advertising rate in the New York Times.

But while other Republicans complained, Rudy Giuliani did something about it. Speaking to reporters in Atlanta on Thursday, Giuliani demanded that the New York Times give his campaign the same discounted rate so it could take out an ad defending Gen. Petraeus and assailing Clinton and MoveOn.org for "character assassination of an American general in a time of war." He also called on the paper to run the ad at the time of his choosing (Friday, the day after President Bush's primetime address to the nation).

The next morning, American liberals had to spit out their soy milk while reading their paper of record over breakfast.

Moreover, if as the Rooty Rooter claim, Rooty Toot is the “only one who can beat Hillary,” why didn’t he do it LAST YEAR?

EXACTLY!!!

It's understandable why he dropped out in 2000 because of the cancer, but I'd like to know why he wimped out against Hillary less than a year ago.

My bet is that, first, his positions are not all that different than hers (reference his comment when Slick was in office, stating that very fact),,,,and second, he did NOT want (what would have been) his liberal Senate voting record carved in stone,,,and maybe even third, the possibility that he would have lost!

He can spares us his LIBERAL efforts now.

I remember thinking at the time that if he was physically able to remain as mayor than he was able to run for the senate.

I don’t even buy the cancer excuse from 2000 — being mayor of NYC is arguably far more stressful than running for the senate.

Actually, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rooty Toot wound up endorsing Hitlery when he doesn’t get the nomination. After all, he supported Cuomo over Pataki in 1994.

Mike, you’re losing your touch. Rudy was trailing Hillary in the polls when he dropped out. If he would have stayed in the race, he would have lost, and we would not be talking about America’s Self-Proclaimed Mayor as a serious presidential candidate.

The La Guardia connection is very important. The two greatest mayors of New York City in the 20th Century were Giuliani and Fiorello La Guardia, both "non traditional" Republicans.

Both understood where the levers of power in New York were located and how they functioned.

Both understood that while running a city via consensus is fine, sometimes you just have to put your boot up the right asses to get something accomplished.

Both understood that you have to fight your political battles without quarter, going for your opponent's weakest point and forcing him to defend it. Slapping your opponent around daily is both good exercise and good policy.

Both came to City Hall with an agenda. For La Guardia, it was to destroy Tammany Hall, the source of New York's culture of corruption since it was founded by Aaron Burr in the 1820's. For Giuliani, it was to end the reign of terror caused by the liberal politics of sanctioned dysfunction.

La Guardia pretty much eradicated Tammany. By the time he died in office in 1945, Tammany only managed to elect one more mayor before New York's Democrats scrapped it and picked another model of corruption.

Giuliani didn't intend to destroy the Democrats' standing model of corruption, but he did it anyway. By taking on the liberal politics of sanctioned dysfunction and winning, he destroyed the New York City Democratic Party's post-Tammany model of governance. Until the city's Democrats come to terms with what Giuliani accomplished in his 8 years, they will never elect another mayor. Giuliani left them in disarray, as did La Guardia two generations earlier.

Could Giuliani's combativeness destroy the national Democratic Party's liberal politics of sanctioned dysfunction? That's the real question for 2008 and beyond.

........................................................

Giuliani defied all odds and logic by first becoming Mayor and then getting re-elected. Just the issue that dRATs registered in NYC outnumber the GOP 80:20.
It was to be fair after that disaster Dinkins where Baghdad is probably now safer than the streets of NYC were at the time.

Two words: Fred Thompson.

We'll see. Fred stepped in it with his drilling for oil in FL gaffe. I keep waiting for him to kick ass and take names. I'm still waiting . . .

Nobody questions that Rooty Toot had cancer. But many think he used it as an excuse to drop out of the race because he knew he would lose. There is NO evidence that suggests that the cancer interfered with his abilities to run for office.

Step back from your temper tantrum and review your post. It is absolutely asinine. You act like prostate cancer treatment is little more than a multidose vitamin. Have you ever had radiotherapy or hormonal therapy or cancer? You don't have a clue and all the othe nitwits that attack him for using his cancer as an excuse are absolutely pathetic.

Rudy is not Reagan but he sure aint the anti-Christ that many Freepers make him out to be.

I am not for one minute diminishing the severity of prostate cancer or its treatment. I am simply pointing out that being mayor of NYC is far more stressful and time-consuming than running for senate.

Had Rooty Toot relinquished his mayoral duties due to his cancer, it would be a different story, but he didn't.

Rudy is not Reagan but he sure aint the anti-Christ that many Freepers make him out to be.

I'm not aware of anyone saying he's the anti-Christ, he's just not a conservative. He's a pro-war liberal along the lines of Joe Lieberman.
