And the lady stops and says, Sir, you need to have another ticket. And I said what for and she said, because of your size.' I hate to admit it but I was in tears.
Mr. Hill weighed 435 pounds.
And everytime I fly I sit between him and his twin brother!
“(and in all likelyhood, would not have).”
Really? Southwest usually flies packed. That’s the whole idea.
I have a brother-in-law who ADMITS to 525#. Believe me, no one would want to be seated next to him on a flight. I have watched people sit between the armrests and sort of pause as the flesh remolds itself and flows UNDER the armrest and into the aisle.
Buy two seats. Please.
People who object to this 1. don’t fly and 2. have never had to sit next to an obese slob whose flab was oozing over the armrests.
no they will charge extra to sit next to them.
I have had such an event occur and the same airline and flight attendants that refused to let me fly with one leg in a cast and the arm rest of the empty adjacent seat raised "for safety reasons" -- permitted the obese person to pull up the arm rest before being seated, required a seat belt extender, then proceeded to place their drink on my table top, as my "seat mate" was unable to lower hers. I believe that happened because I happen to be 5' 1" and weigh 104 lbs so they assumed I did NOT NEED a whole seat to myself.
There will be no next time, for that ever again to happen!!! I'll demand a seat in first class, a different seat for the person using my seat as well as his/hers, or he/she purchase two seats, as long as they require that much room!
When he oozes over into my seat.
“I believe they did it, simply because they could.”
There could have been standby fliers who would have taken the seat, or not boarded if the fat guy opted for it.
OMG that is almost the same as 3 grown men.
That's as big as 2 big people - how would you like to be the person assigned to the seat next to him - and the plane was full?
I have had a passenger sit next to me that was so obese that I had to lean over into the space of the passenger on the opposite side to avoid having constant, annoying pressure from the obese passenger...forget about the armrest...couldn’t even see it after the guy sat down.
The airlines are selling space on the flight. Anyone whose body extends to the point that it takes up more width than the seats can comfortably manage should have to buy another seat. Do big and tall people expect to get a suit for the same price as someone who wears clothing that requires half as much material to make? Overeating is a choice...no one is force-feeding them.
I have a suggestion for larger people...I mean those who are not necessarily tall though they could do this for the leg room, but those who are obese...consider first class where the seats are larger and there is more room and fewer people. If they are going to have to pay more anyway, they deserve to be comfortable and so do we.
I too have had large fannies in my face when I have had an aisle seat as well as fellow passengers lopping into my space. Flying anymore is not fun or enjoyable, why should it be made worse by folks like the 425lb man,

I just flew to California from DC and back- got back this morning. Handy travel tip: I bought a box of 'step 1' level Nicotine patches for the trip. I put one on the inboard side of each arm, and didn't think about a smoke for the whole trip- I was completely comfortable.
Yes, I need to get off of the darn things, but until I do- that is my solution to the misery of being a smoker in a strict no smoking environment like that for an extended period of time.
All kidding aside, if you see the video, this is a big man. And it is not just him... right now, about 65% of the adult population of America is either obese or overweight. And they say by 2015, the percentage will be up to 75%.
The worst thing about this is many people really do understand the risk they are putting themselves into with their eating habits and lack of exercise.
And yet, we are spending more and more each year on weight loss products and information. It is criminal! How can we be getting fatter? I think the weight loss industry should be fired. They are doing a very bad job of confusing the heck out of people while taking their money (well, doing a great job at their point of view).
Usually the simplest solution is the best solution if you think what our ancestors did before farming was invented 10,000 years ago. They hunted animals. They ate fruit, nuts and roots. They didn't eat breads or refined sugar. They walked. They ran. They climbed trees to get away from the predators. And believe me, they were strong and lean.
I think this man should use this episode as motivation to get his life back. Blaming the airplane industry or other passengers for his predicament isn't healthy and doesn't solve the root of his real problem -- his life!
At least the one in Fontana. Sheesh.
When I was in the service, I bought first class airfare from Norfolk, VA, to Amarillo, TX to go home on leave.
I flew from Norfolk to Dallas and changed planes. The flight to Amarillo didn’t have first class, so the stewardess sat me next to her and served the in-flight goodies to me first, then everyone else. When she was done with that, she came back and sat next to me for the remainder of the flight. Now that was really first class.
Ironic indeed that you mention "tipping point" -- this is a picture of the plane just before it took off, the guy's on the right side, har har
