Wonder if they’ll figure out that the crims don’t buy them legally..

Let me guess : a semi automatic 22 hunting rifle is an “assault” weapon.

"You can buy an assault rifle for about $200," said Carlos Baixauli, a special agent with the Miami district office of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

That doesn't come with the mindset to become a criminal as a requirement of the sale.

That has to be acquired elsewhere.

This is one of the most blatantly dishonest articles I have read in a very long time.

I.E.:

Meant for war, or to be fired from the hip, assault rifles such as the notorious AK-47, the favorite of guerrilla fighters around the world, can spit a lethal spray of up to 600 rounds a minute in full automatic mode.

Possibly. But the AK-47 "look-alikes" (e.g. WASR-10) sold in the U.S. are not "assault rifles". They are semi-automatic only. You pull the trigger, and they fire one round, and one round only.

Comparing them to true (selective-fire) assault rifles is dishonest, despicable, and reprehensible.

Their potent punch leaves officers equipped with traditional handguns at a disadvantage.

This line is obviously an attempt to deceive the reader into believing that these "assault rifles" are extraordinarily powerful. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The 7.62x39 cartridge, chambered in such firearms as the true AK-47, WASR-10, SKS Carbine, Ruger Mini-30, etc., is roughly equal to the .30-30 Winchester in power & performance.

When measuring foot-pounds of energy, the 7.62x39 cartridge is barely half as powerful as the .30-06

Here we go again. I’m not giving up my second amendment rights because somebody wants to be a cop. I’m sure there are a lot of cops who would love that to happen.

Little Bobby Nolin is a blithering presstitutional idiot pandering to the gun grabbers if he believes for one minute what he wants you to read for five minutes..........

Have him tell us again why the criminals will elect to follow “his” pet issue laws and not the others ?

Doom on him and his......their incremental BS against the law abiding citizens and their coddling of real criminals is obvious and insane.

The thing that grabs me about America's gun laws, aside from the fact that they're basically all unconstitutional, is the basic inanity of them. "Assault weapons" are a case in point. There are basically two definitions of an assault weapon, i.e. a political and a military definition.

The political definition is basically just anything which, on a scale of one to ten for being scary looking to demokkkrats, goes much over a six.

The real military definition is more complex. Most assume a weapon has to be at least semi-automatic and preferably automatic to qualify but, in real life, that's not really necessary. In fact in real life, most people attempting to fire any military weapon in full auto mode will never hit anything with it.

What you really want and need for an assault weapon are things which work well in assault situations:

Add to that list the ideas that it would be good if the thing never jammed and were easy to clean. Add all of that up, and what I come up with is a lot different from the pictures you usually see:

That's basically a Henry lever-action rifle in 22 wmr caliber, which is basically a $330 item on Gunbroker or at BassPro or Gander Mountain. Couple that with some of the hotter WMR ammo and you have a 40-gr bullet moving just over 2000 fps which can be totally cleaned by pulling one of your string type cleaners through the bore.

That's about what I'd want for an "assault rifle" in today's world. You'd have to figure some way to make the feed tubes detachable/quick-change, but that's not a major engineering feat.

Idle chat at the fuel pumps with a deputy sheriff after local shoot out with cop/good old boy.

Cop said: "I'm much more afraid of a redneck with a scoped 30-30 that he has shot for 20 yrs than a banger with an Ak that can't hit S**t." This shooting proves him right. I think more would have been killed with a 12ga pump. (prayers to family of downed officer).ps, true story.

They’ve simply gotten high tech. My daughter is a police officer and she told me that a fellow officer stopped a car at night a few months ago for a traffic violation. By coincidence, there were other cops in the area and she and two other cars arrived, making a total of four cops (they travel solo).

Needless to say, the occupants of the car had warrants on them - and then a search turned up drugs and weapons up one side and down the other. It also revealed a pin-hole camera with an opening next to the license plate, which transmitted images to what the cops had initially thought was a DVD player in the front seat. In other words, the drug thugs could watch everything that was going on outside without even turning around.

In this case, the fact that they were virtually surrounded by cop cars made them go quietly. But if only one officer had walked up on them, that person would probably be dead now.

You can buy an assault rifle for about $200," said Carlos Baixauli, a special agent with the Miami district office of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. "That gives you a lot of firepower with the flick of a finger."

Oh really. A full auto or burst fire capable weapon for $200? Where, off the back of a truck, sold by a guy who stole them from a military or police, including federal police, weapons room?

But not in the US. Newly manufactured full auto (including burst fire) weapons have been illegal for mere civilians peons, to own in the US since 1986. So both the buyer and the seller of those $200 assault rifles would be committing a federal felony, even if they were otherwise law abiding citizens. Of course the criminals attitude is "whats one more felony. Actually you can buy an assault rifle for under $200, in any third world country. In fact you can probably get them even cheaper than that.

Miami Dade and Broward had already decided to issue the AR15 to line officers before last weekend's killings. I don't see, however, how having AR's on hand this last time would have helped the situation. These cops didn't even have handguns out, nor were they particularly alert, figuring, I guess the odds were four to one. According to a police dispatcher I spoke to, these cops were remarkably nonchalant while approaching the vehicle, even though the two most dangerous jobs in police work are car stops and domestic disputes.

I've heard some cops (friends and acquaintances) and some other folks "in the know" and the consensus seems to be this was SJS: Sudden Jihadi Syndrome. This guy was training for some kind of event requiring getting out from behind the wheel of an automobile and using the AK, swiftly and accurately. Know how difficult that is to do? I train all the time to exit my vehicle while bringing a handgun to bear and that's damned difficult. Now imagine something that measures just over one meter in length.

Those cops stumbled onto an operation in motion and the little Jihadi knew his number was up so he decided to execute on the spot. He apparently bought the weapons using the stolen identity he had. That the "girlfriend" used the stolen identity as a deception to throw the cops off the scent, automatically raises flags as to how planned all of this seems to be. Will any or all of this make it into the news? What do you think? Initial reports state the perp had "strong ties" to the Miami Muslim community, but they're a powerful entity and will suppress this, I'm sure.

Scary part? If there's one there's many. Imagine a packed mall the day after Thanksgiving. Imagine multiple cities and teams of well armed Jihadis. Now imagine how our government will react. Will they pull an Israel and encourage citizens to arm themselves and get training? Heck no. We'll be looking at all sorts of permanent gun bans and a situation like the sheep now face in the UK.

I was watching BBC America last night. One of our (my wife and I) favorite shows is MI-5. Perfect example of the benevolent despot. The sheep are disarmed and under constant video surveillance so that the "sheep herders" of the government can "keep them safe for their own good." The sheepdog is cut out of the equation. Last night's episode was very telling as one MI-5 operative had it out with a political superior over the intentional assassination by the gov't of a rogue army officer to simply silence dissent. The MI-5 guy said that if this is what the New World Order is all about then he's on the wrong side. He was promptly suspended. Next week is the season finale. This storyline is supposed to culminate in a cliff hanger. Ought to be interesting.
