Next summer, less than four months before the November election, there will still be about as many American troops fighting in Iraq as there were on the day of the Democratic sweep in the November 2006 election. That is the most politically significant fact that emerged from last week's congressional hearings with Gen. David H. Petraeus. The general said that from now until at least the middle of July, he plans to maintain about as many troops in Iraq as were in the field in the fall of 2006 -- about 140,000 in all. President Bush endorsed that strategy in his speech Thursday.
Those plans virtually assure that Iraq will dominate the presidential and congressional campaigns and divide the parties as much in 2008 as it did in 2006 and 2004.
"What this guarantees is that Iraq is still going to be as front and center in the general election as it is today," said Gregory Craig, a former State Department director of policy planning for President Clinton who now advises Sen. Barack Obama. "If there are 130,000 or more American troops in Iraq next summer, there are going to be comparable casualties and uncertainty about the future. So it is going to loom large at the expense of every other issue."

El Rushbo: “Conservatism works every time it’s tried!”
I think the LA slimes will be sunk before the GOP.
Answer: No.
Comment: It is the massive third world illegal immigration that will sink the GOP-and the rest of us.
Ronald Brownstein has probably never met anybody who has ever voted for a Republican, so his detailed analysis must be unbiased. I wonder if he refers to his work station at the LA Times as his “Green Zone”. Maybe he should get out of there every now and then.
I’m sure the Democrats, and their lapdogs in the media, hope it will.
The GOP may lose ‘08 but to stand on principle will pay off in the long run. The Democrats are putting themselves in a box because if one is elected President and they don’t remove troops their fringe base turns on them but if they remove the troops and all hell breaks loose they own it.
Brownstein, a former leftist nader-raider, is hoping so.
Where is Ralph? I'm hoping he jumps in again, that should split up the Dem anti-war vote.
Candidates like Ron Paul, with his strong anti-war message, receiving notice with Republicans reinforces the notion of running scared.
Distancing themselves from the President and his policy currently, even with evidence it is finally working as desired, is nothing more than the Democrats setting the terms for our candidates to run on.
Taking a strong stance on finishing the mission, supporting the mission and our Troops takes courage in today’s campaigning. We cannot allow the Democrats to keep setting the argument for us, we must all take a strong stand and stand together in opposition to Democrats and other anti-war kooks.
Only one candidate has consistently stood his ground in support of the Troops, the War’s Mission, Illegal Immigration and such, without wavering or succumbing to the left’s agenda, Duncan Hunter.
We need to stop fearing Hillary and put up support for and get behind one who speaks and lives the message of Patriotism that made our country great.
As more and more people hear his message, his support grows. Strong conservatives are what will return this country to the greatness created long ago. Moderates and RINO’s will only give the Democrats more control.
“Reaching out” to far left democrats will sink the GOP.
WILL IRAQ SINK THE DEMOCRATS?
How about will the attack by the dems lapdog moveon sink the democrats
America will sacrifice blood and treasure for our own freedom, but we will not do it for long for those who we see as undeserving.
BUahahahahahahahahahhhh!
They wish.
What a bunch of sorry assed anti-freedom loving losers these little LA shts are!
Iraq Liberation War. Get Some!
No.
Nice try Lib Brownstein
The GOP needs to start fight back.
