DEARBORN - A laptop seized from the home of a Wayne State University medical student earlier this week could hold the key to an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Police Department and the FBI.
The laptop belongs to 26-year-old Dearborn resident Houssein Zorkot, who was arraigned Tuesday in 19th District Court on multiple felony charges, including one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent a five-year felony.
Dearborn police arrested Zorkot Sept. 8 after he was seen wielding an AK-47 semi-automatic assault rifle in Hemlock Park. But what led Zorkot to take up arms is still a mystery.
"At this point, we have not been able to determine a motive," said Police Chief Mike Celeski. "But this is still an ongoing investigation, and we're still collecting information."
Based on statements Zorkot made at the time of his arrest, police obtained and executed a search warrant on his home. A laptop computer and several pictures were seized.
According to Mayor Jack O'Reilly, several of the pictures were taken during a recent trip by Zorkot to Lebanon, and featured him standing in front of pro-Hezbollah billboards.
"These pictures alone are not enough to connect him to Hezbollah, but his Web site suggests that he does have an affinity for the group," O'Reilly said.
Hezbollah has been designated as a terrorist group by at least six countries, including the United States. In Lebanon, it represents one of the country's two major political parties.
The group allegedly has been involved in numerous paramilitary activities, including a war between Lebanon and Israel in 2006.
While Hezbollah is viewed as a terrorist threat by several nations, others regard the group as a resistance movement.
According to Zorkot's Web site, www.zorkot.org, he says he supports Lebanon and "the resistance." Hezbollah is also mentioned numerous times on the site, and is prominently featured in several photos.
However, Zorkot has not been identified as a terrorist and has yet to be linked to any terrorist group or terrorist activities, according to city officials.
"Is he a terrorist? At this point, we don't know," Celeski said. "We don't know what his intentions were. That's why we sought the assistance of the FBI."
The FBI was notified about the incident by Dearborn police, according to spokeswoman Dawn Clenney, and has been working closely with members of the department.
"They have advised us of the matter and we are aware of the situation," Clenney said. "However, we feel that it would be inappropriate to comment further on the case at this time."
According to city officials, the FBI primarily is assisting the department in examining the laptop. The computer is believed to contain information relevant to the case.
"The information on that computer will tell us whether there is reason to be concerned," O'Reilly said. "But until we are able to obtain that information, the legal process will continue to move forward as it should."
Zorkot has been charged with one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, one count of possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and one count felony firearm. He remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond and is scheduled to return to court Friday for his preliminary exam.
"That hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence to bind him over for trial," said 19th District Court Judge Mark Somers, who set the $1 million bond Tuesday.
"Given his actions, his behavior and the way he was dressed, I don't believe a $1 million bond is unreasonable," O'Reilly said. "With any luck, it will keep him in jail until we're able to sort this out."
According to police, Zorkot was dressed in dark clothing and had camouflage paint covering his face when residents observed him on Sept. 8 walking through Hemlock Park with a rifle in his hand.
"I would like to commend those eyewitnesses for their actions," Celeski said. "They did not confront (Zorkot), instead they contacted police and were able to provide important information. If it weren't for their quick-thinking and the actions of our officers the situation could have quickly escalated."
Officers responded to the park and observed Zorkot attempting to leave the area in a black SUV. The officers used their patrol vehicles to prevent the vehicle from leaving and confronted Zorkot.
During the confrontation, Zorkot allegedly reached for the loaded AK-47, but was subdued by officers before he was able to use it. Police said the gun purchased about 1:04 p.m. that same day from a store in a nearby community.
"We won't know anything more until we're able to sort through the information we've collected," Celeski said. "At this point, we don't know why he would do this."
Zorkot doesn't have a criminal history, O'Reilly said, but investigators believe the he may have been having personal problems recently both at home and at Wayne State University, where he attends medical school.
Representatives from the university declined to comment on the case, but said that they had been notified by Dearborn police about the incident and have taken appropriate action.
Maybe somone should clue the Dearborn P.D. into the fact that we are at war with Islamic terrorists!
Gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...I sure as hell hope the rest of this country's PD's are more on top of the situation than these clowns are...and Dearborn is just LOADED with muzzies!!!
Nothing here to see. Move along. Move along.
The authorities can't figure out why a muslim would take up arms?
We are not safe.
Sudden Jihadi Interruptus.
Quick thinking? *sigh* It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that some guy running around at night, in camo, with a machine gun means trouble.
Somebody should have shot him.
Moose Limb with a AK-47 ?
Maybe, or maybe he was looking for someone in particular. Lots of Moslems in that area, it could have been some kind of personal/domestic issue. Of course, other possibilities should equally be investigated, especially after what they found on his laptop. But it’s the cops job to look into all possibilities, and not to spout off until they have.

This sounds like an episode of the Dead Zone; somebody needs to be able to read this guy's thoughts in order to determine if a crime has been committed?
Hey, Chief: Here's a CLUE:

Nope, NO IDEA what his MOTIVE would be. NONE AT ALL. Officer Barbrady would be so proud.
That's Italian isn't it? /sarc
Well, it’s certainly possible that he was just some angry person who was planning to settle a barfight once and for all. But if I were to bet, that’s not what I’d put my money on.
I understand that the authorities can’t make accusations without any evidence, but it sometimes boggles the mind to hear them tippytoeing around something that looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck while they bend over backwards to allow for the possibility that it’s just a pigeon with a thyroid problem.
