Poland backs Britain in EU opt-out
The Polish Government announced that it would join Britain in opting out of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, a cornerstone of the new treaty meant to replace the proposed European Union constitution.
In June, EU leaders agreed the framework of a treaty to improve EU organisation in place of the constitution that was torpedoed by French and Dutch voters in 2005.
Britain negotiated its opt-out at the EU summit. The summit framework said the treaty would note that nothing in the Charter of Fundamental Rights rights enjoyed by EU citizens and residents creates justifiable rights applicable to the United Kingdom. Portugal, which holds the EUs rotating presidency, has been pushing members to keep the new treaty on track, amid fears that Poland could derail efforts to finalise an agreement. Portugal wants a deal by the October 18-19 summit, despite Poland being due to hold politically sensitive legislative elections only days after the meeting. (AFP)
Great news.
Britain and Poland. Our best European allies.
I hope they haven't been criticizing the Iraq government for taking so long to solve its problems.
It feels like September 1939 all over again! :)
And even Germany and France have recently elected leaders that are more friendly towards the US.
Funny, since all of the people with BDS claim that Bush is causing us to lose friends.
