Obama: Democrats don't have Iraq votes (Checkmate)

MAQUOKETA, Iowa - Despite the Iraq war's unpopularity, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday that Congress lacks the votes to force a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops and will focus instead on putting a ceiling on the number deployed.

"One way of ending the war would be setting a timetable. We're about 15 votes short. Right now it doesn't look like we're going to get that many votes," Obama said, referring to the number needed to override an expected veto by President Bush.

The Illinois senator said the most likely scenario would be to grant troops more time at home between deployments, a politically popular step that's difficult to oppose and one that would have a practical impact.

If they come back with this, more time home strategy, the Bush should counter with ... great, we only need 6 more Active Army combat brigades and 3 more Active Marine combat brigades to make that happen.

That won’t stop them of having more Iraqi Surrender Theater to keep the money flowing in.

I’m still wondering where these millions of anti-war Americans are hanging out—the so-called defining polls call a thousand people and they represent 300 million citizens? Hmmmm. I’m a bit skeptical.

Now, who’s this Obama/Osama guy again?

B. Hussein Obama is really stupid. But since everyone knows that, it’s not the most important part of this story. The important part is that if the American public were entirely against the war, as B. Hussein claims, the defeatist dems would have no problem getting all the votes they need to cut funding. Since they can’t get the votes, I can only assume the American public isn’t against the war; they’re against LOSING the war.

For once, Obama has said something that makes a good deal of sense. The Democrats know that they aren’t going to get their timetable, or really anything else on their defeatist agenda. That said, why is it that they continue to yell and scream and raise holy hell about it, rather than working on something else in the meantime? Why not bring up a health care debate, or something in regards to taxes? Easy, it’s politics. They are using a tough situation, and an unpopular war to fling mud at others. As far as they’re concerned, the troops are just tools of their agenda. It’s rather sick.

Oh, yeah, that’s right! When we catch him, the world will be all sunshine and roses and never a care again!!

By all means, let the hunt for Obama begin! Enough of this fooling around in Iraq.

I agree...I would love to know where they poll since most people I talk to have some sense. There are those few but even those for the most part back down in their arguments, and I know there are those idiotic ones but they are in the minority from those I speak to. Maybe I just live among smarter people...heh?

Well at least Obama has the guts to call it as it is, vs. Pelosi et al doing the two -step around the issue, trying to bamboozle their anti-war constituents.

I have a gut feeling that Hillary is going to capture and destroy that Obama guy by February 5th 2008.

Then the world will be all sunishine and rainbows.

“Now, who’s this Obama/Osama guy again?”

He doesn’t even know.....he’s so confused and desperate to be relevant that he postures as if it is Bush he’s running against, LOL

from the article (this is REALLY a backhanded way of trying to engineer defeat, btw):

“....grant troops more time at home between deployments, a politically popular step that’s difficult to oppose and one that would have a practical impact.”

I suspect that if they somehow do this, that as the drawdown begins and smaller troop levels are adequate that the GI’s who want to get this done and over with would be plenty sufficient to volunteer to forego whatever nonsense the congress might legislate regarding in-theatre deployments. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? The active duty GI’s trumping congress.........imagine that!
