SACRAMENTO -- Having already laid down the law for his two teenage daughters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Thursday that will prohibit the rest of Californians under age 18 from using cellphones, text message devices and laptop computers while driving.

I agree. When I first heard this today, I caught the end of a news clip. At the time I thought this meant everyone including adults. I’m glad to hear it doesn’t. I have a nice hands free setup that is voice activated, and I didn’t want to forgo using it in the car.

Good.
Not so fast. As with everything else that has occurred in the history of the nanny state, a law that applies to only certain people or certain situations will eventually apply to everyone. This "only teenagers" thing is simply the way to get everyone used to the idea, then they pass the law telling all adults that they aren't allowed to use cell phones while driving either. This is not a guess, or a wild prediction. This is an absolute certainty.
We'll still have some who say "good, all drivers should be banned from using cell phones", but I would like to know why that is a good idea, aside from the fact that it is simply annoying to see people do that. Shall we ban applying lipstick? Combing hair? Eating? At what point do we decide that the government has quite enough say in our daily lives?

The law banning adults from cell phone use, without hands free devices, while driving has already been passed in California. I think it takes effect next year.

“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Thursday that will prohibit the rest of Californians under age 18 from using cellphones, text message devices and laptop computers while driving.”
Does this mean that if you are over 18 it’s OK to use a laptop while driving?
To: DoughtyOne
Oh yeah, that’s going to help; especially when most of the people I see using their gadgets while driving are past their teenage years.

The concept of personal responsibility is being replaced with the nanny state, at great expense to the taxpayer. Everyone should take a long, hard look at what is going on in the UK. Do we really want to go there? Apparently, California does.......

There wouldn’t be a need of laws if people used their brains. Most people need to pay attention to the road and 360 degrees around their vehicle. I don’t believe anybody can be aware if they are talking on their pacifier. Several years ago, I passed a young lady applying mascara while she was driving. Idiots.

Several years ago, I passed a young lady applying mascara while she was driving. Idiots. About 20 years ago I was stuck in Atlanta traffic. After sitting nearly still for 20 minutes, things finally started moving at about 45 mph. Then, everything came to a screeching halt. I looked over at the car in the next lane and there was a woman with a black streak up her face where she'd been putting on makeup and had to slam on the brakes. I nearly wet my britches laughing......

Now, they are probably putting on mascara, talking on their cell phone and trying to drive. I believe they call it Multi Tasking.

It’s a dumb as signing a law banning drunk driving only for teens. Cellphone driving with one hand on the phone is impaired driving.
I saw a dumba.. with his right hand to his left ear with the phone while he was trying to negotiate his left turn with his left hand. It leaves little opportunity for a response if he needs to react.
