WASHINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson has a rare type of cancer that specialists say is incurable but not life-threatening over the short term.
Although the 65-year-old former senator and actor says his disease is in remission, studies of other cases indicate that it's likely to return within the next two to five years.
But cancer experts say his malignancy -- a slow-growing disruption of the immune system known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma -- can be well managed with drugs and needn't interfere with normal activities.
They say Thompson has an excellent chance of survival for at least five to 10 years, based on the experiences of other patients reported in medical journals.
"My understanding is you can expect to live a normal life expectancy," Thompson said Sunday on his campaign bus. But he acknowledged that "it's something that is always potentially there."
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the lymph system, a complex network of specialized cells whose task is to detect and destroy invading microbes.
For unknown reasons, some lymph cells occasionally run amok, traveling through the body and forming cancerous lumps that interfere with the immune system.
Sometimes these unruly cells grow rapidly, causing an "aggressive" non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that's often fatal. Sometimes the growth is slow, leading to a case of "indolent," or painless, lymphoma. This is the kind that Thompson has.

Thanks to improvements in treatment, patients are surviving longer than they used to. The five-year expected survival rate of 63 percent is up from 48 percent 30 years ago.
Thompson's cancer was detected in 2004, as a lump in his neck. It later spread to other areas. His doctor prescribed a new drug, Rituxan, which drove the disease into remission.

By all means, and please ping me to your articles. Thanks!
Excuse me .. but the “likely to return in 2-5 years” is the same diagnosis they give to everybody. But I believe Fred has already passed several years with no recurrence.
The dems are desperate and they will say anything to try to discourage people on Fred - BUT YOU DON’T HEAR THEM SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT McCAIN - AND HE LOOKS AWFUL!!
I had a boyfriend die of NHL years ago, and in the end the last several months they had to give him morphine because the pain was so great.
It was off and on they had to take out the spleen in those days I don’t if they go that route today!
And I perceive in many conservatives an ideology so narrow it sees evil and condemns when instead reasoned analyis of facts would suffice.
What you all could do is pick a Sunday and fast and pray for Fred’s good health!
Your earthly body of flesh still dies.
For those who have kept the Gospel, there will be no Judgment and no end. For these the end of the world will simply be like the changing of clothes. Like going from rags to the robes of state.
Speaking of these robes Paul said, "...there are heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies...If the soul has its own embodiment, so does the spirit have its own embodiment. This (exchange of clothes) will be instantaneous, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet sounds. "
"It will sound, and the dead will be raised, [ and not all those who have ever died, just those who died during Armageddon's hour] imperishable, and we shall be changed as well, because our present perishable nature must put on imperishability and this mortal nature must put on immortality...then the words of scripture will come true: 'Death is swallowed up in victory." (1 Cor.15:41-56).
Victory is eternal life in the NEW world in the NEW heaven, because:
"Now heaven, celebrate her downfall, and all you saints, apostles and prophets: God has given judgment for you against her. Then a powerful angel picked up a boulder like a great millstone, and as he hurled it into the sea, he said, 'That is how the great city of Babylon is going to be hurled down, never to be seen again." (Rv.18:20-21).
[the great city of Babylon is the old earth]
"After this I seemed to hear the great sound of a huge crowd in heaven, singing, 'Alleluia! Victory and glory and power to our God! He judges fairly, he punishes justly, and he has condemned the famous prostitute who corrupted the earth with her fornication; he has avenged his servants that she killed'.
Then a voice came from the throne; it said, 'praise our God, you servants of his and all who, great or small, revere him'. And I seemed to hear the voices of a huge crowd, like the sound of the ocean or the great roar of thunder, answering, 'Alleluia!
The reign of the Lord our God Almighty has begun; let us be glad and joyful and give praise to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb. His bride is ready, and she has been able to dress herself in dazzling white linen, because her linen is made of the good deeds of the saints.'
The angel said, 'Write this: Happy are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb', and he added, 'All the things you have written are true messages from God'.
Then I knelt at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, 'Don't do that: I am a servant just like you and all your brothers who are witnesses to Jesus. It is God that you must worship." (Rv.19:1-10).
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea.
I saw the holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband.
Then I heard a loud voice call from the throne, 'You see this city? Here God lives among men. He will make his home among them; they shall be his people, and he, himself will be their God...There will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness. The world of the past has gone.'
Then the One sitting on the throne spoke: 'Now I am making the whole of creation new' he said. 'Write this: that what I am saying is sure and will come true.' And then he said, 'It is already done." (Rv.21:4-5).
The old earth, the old universe is destroyed, and a new perfect one, one without death, one that hasn't been corupted by Satan, one that will last forevermore replaces the old.
Though God may have created this world in righteousness, that is not what we see in it now. Jesus said that the prince of this earth is Satan, and that is why it must be destroyed.
Are you sure YOU'LL be around to see?
this is going to be a l-o-n-g
14 month election.
That would be a great combination. From most any standpoint. Because he is a “Southern” candidate, he would to well to select a westerner or north easterner. Hunter are close enough together philosophically that they would be a very strong team.
My friend was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lyphoma 25 years ago, and he’s still alive, albeit he has heart failure because the chemo ruined his heart.
Ed
I survived cancer for 10 years but that Chemo left me in bad shape still trying to put it togather!
Are you sure YOU’LL be around to see?
What does that mean?
The more I look at him, the more I dont see a two-term President. --Look at him in L&O--sorry, that's LAW AND ORDER (The TV show he was on) for you--and look at him now. He looks thinner, and close to sickly. He is in his 60s now, with non-Hodgskins Lymphoma, and his age, that raises questions. I don't like that he is sick, I am stating what I see, and I have the right to do so.
Dare I say less than a one-termer. --His condition, coupled, sorry, PLUS the stress of a Presidency, may mean a recurrence (which means it can happen again)
We have to be ready for this.--Conservatives need to think about this, as well as the selection of his running mate, and how, if elected, the Democrats, the media, soros and other wackos, our enemies, etc. will deal with this.
I broke it all down for you. Is that better? Is there any hidden meaning you want to imply from my statements now? I assume you meant to paint me as an angry(?) Fred hater who revels (def: takes joy) in his sickness. No one with a brain in their head, even you, can say that now. So go back to my home page, and learn something. I hate to toot my own horn, but my 100% original statements there have been used worldwide by other bloggers, and best selling authors...some I believe you enjoy reading and watching on TV from time to time when they are on Fox News subbing for their most popular host.
Thank you for visiting, and for your information, Fred is my "head" choice for President. Hunter is my "heart" choice.
I hear they have a pill for breast cancer.
They got a lot of knowledge from the rain forest!
"Non-Hodgkins lymphoma" isn't one diseaseit's many distinct conditions all lumped into one category. There are fast, aggressive NHLs and slow ("indolent"), treatable ones. The fact that your boss was out of work for a year during treatment means he had the former kind. Someone very close to me, on the other hand, has had an indolent NHL, the same kind Thompson has from what I've gathered, for over a year now, and she's missed a grand total of nine days of work.
Neither Thompson nor his doctors are lying or stupid. Indolent NHL is serious, yes, but it's highly treatable. There's no reason to believe that his lymphoma will prevent him from serving two full terms; in fact, odds are good NHL won't be what kills him when he does eventually die.
Okay, lets. As I recall, it came up while Rudy was running for the Senate against Hillary. It forced him to drop out of the race, leaving his GOP replacement candidate to try to beat the Clinton machine at the last minute.
And that, boys and girls, is why her heinous is a US Senator today.
That is an absurd statement. The general health of anyone running for president is an issue. You don’t die from being female you die from NHL. I had two friends that had other cancer that were remission, but who died unexpectedly from NHL. The stresses of being president are immense and can age a healthy person, starting out sick is not a winning recipe for longevity. Some one earlier mentioned that Clinton seemed to be unaffected by the stress. I seem to remember him having some sort of heart trouble not long after leaving the WH and at a very young age.
I feel bad for Fred, I like him. However I think his best role for the party at this point in his life would be as an unencumbered spokesman who can go out and say the things that need be said, but are hard for a candidate to say without possibly alienating some voters.
