Rutgers player drops suit over Imus slur

A Rutgers University basketball player on Tuesday withdrew a slander and defamation lawsuit she had filed against Don Imus and CBS Radio, among others, after the shock jock called the team "nappy headed hos."

Kia Vaughn had contended in the lawsuit filed in August in New York state Supreme Court that the comments made by Imus had damaged her reputation.

The lawsuit also named various media outlets that broadcast Imus' show.

Marti McKenzie, a spokeswoman for Vaughn's attorney, Richard Ancowitz, said in a statement that Vaughn had chosen to focus on her education at New Jersey's Rutgers University as a journalism major and as an athlete with the basketball team.

"Her strong commitments to both have influenced her decision to withdraw the lawsuit at this time," the statement said.

She must have been told she couldn't win. I'm not buying into this "I'm going to focus on my studies" crap.

That briefcase full of cash that appeared in her locker helped as well.

Vaughn had chosen to focus on her education at New Jersey's Rutgers University as a journalism major and as an athlete with the basketball team.

Perhaps in one of her journalism classes they covered what kind of things are and are not actionable in a slander or defamation case and she then realized that her case didn't even come close to qualifying for any damages.

“That briefcase full of cash that appeared in her locker helped as well.”

Either that or she is a slut and knows the Imus lawyers know it and can prove it.

Imus apologized on air, in person repeatedly.

Most people couldn’t name one of those Rutger’s team members unless they keep THEMSELVES in the news.

And logic tells you that if a shock jock calls some woman a name, it doesn’t mean anyone takes it seriously for a second.
They have to point out their own embarrassment by keeping it in the press themselves and that would be their own doing IMO.

This was a business decision. CBS Radio made the decision and it turned out to be a bad decision. It cost them money. They are trying to figure a way to reverse the decision.

If she’s so strongly committed to her education and the team, then why the heck did she file the lawsuit in the first place?

Agreed.Either her contingency-fee lawyer either pulled out of the case or it became evident to her that there’s a skeleton in her past that she wishes not be exposed in a courtroom.

If that was the case the announcement would have been "a settlement has been reached between Mr Imus and Ms So-And-So,the details of which will not be made public..."

There is a TV show about lawyers staring Glenn Close called “Damages”.

The lead witness in a big damages case found her dog dead!

either that or she took a look in a mirror and realized she is a “nappy headed hos.”.

As i tell my children: If you dress and act like a street bum or a hooker, don’t be surprised if you are called one or treated like one.

Maybe her lawyer is unaware of the transaction. That would reduce the amount to the lawyer.
