Rasmussen(9/12/2007) Thompson 28% Giuliana 20%...

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll Wednesday, September 12, 2007

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that Fred Thompson on top once again in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination, Thompson is now the top choice for 28% of Likely Republican Primary Voters matching his highest level of support recorded to date. The question at the moment is how long the bounce from his official entry into the race will last. Rudy Giuliani, who has been the frontrunner for most of the year, is eight points behind Thompson with support from 20%. That figure reflects the lowest level of support recorded all year for the New Yorker. Data released yesterday shows that Republicans consider Giuliani the most electable candidate from their party.

Arizona Senator John McCain earns 12% of the vote and has moved a point ahead of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 11%. While the one-point difference is statistically insignificant, this is the first time in months that McCain has moved ahead of Romney by any margin. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee remains atop the second tier at 6% (see recent daily numbers).

There is little change in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. New York Senator Hillary Clinton attracts 42% of the vote from Likely Democratic Primary Voters. Barack Obama is the top choice for 22% while John Edwards attracts 18% (see recent daily numbers). New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is a distant fourth at 3%

Thompson radiates a quality that neither Giuliani nor Romney have and that is, “Good-Old American Common Sense”. This not to say that Giuliani or Romney are not good Americans and do not have common sense. They are products of leftist New York City and the Peoples Republic of Mass. not middle America. Thompson is “Middle America”. He is not Reagan but more like a modern Ben Franklin. He is for the most part his own man. A good man.

power hungry tax raising socilaists

That’s funny, picking the power hungry socialist with an R behind his name over the power hungry socialist with a D behind her name.

That’ll get you lower taxes, more freedom and a strong Republicrat party.

Why is Rudy more appealing overall?

Just curious as to your reasoning.

Giuliani is strong on defense. He speaks with fire in the belly. He is weak on gun control and other social issues. His real strength has been a perception he can beat Hillary. The Conservative Base has an underlining distrust of him. If his polls go downwards it will confirm what is real strength has been; beating Hillary

In the campaign for one week and been to how many states? Let's see, there was Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida.

He's been a declared candidate for a week and managed to vist four states. Just yesterday, I had breakfast in Idaho, lunch in Utah, grabbed a sandwich in Kentucky and made it home to Pennsylvania by midnight. Same number-- four states in one day and I'm not running for president. Here in flyover country, we call it a day's work.

Precisely. You're not running for president. You equate your trip with a presidential campaign?

How many speeches did you make? How many venues? How many staff travel with you? What logistics did they have to handle for you? "Grab a sandwich?"

Work ethic...

What the hell are you talking about?

Fred is a freaking Lawyer/Actor/Senator.

Do you think a man has three successful careers sitting on his ass?

Just because he did not fit your mold of what a campaign should look like doesn’t mean he’s lazy, just smart.

I am sorry he showed your guy up, whomever it is/was, but give us a break.

The best guy out there on the issues is Duncan Hunter. I'll take his resume over Fred Thompson's resume any day. I don't rule out that Fred Thompson might make a decent president. I just don't think he will get the chance if he has the nomination handed to him rather than having to earn it.

George Will raises a few more questions about Fred which deserve to be addressed.

With few exceptions, I would agree with you. Hunter is good, but there has been no traction for him what so ever. Sad but true. Fred is going to give a place for his support to roost, at least one better than Rudy and Mitt

The focus however is the assertion that Fred is lazy, which clearly he is not if anyone looks at his career. Comparing Hunter to Thompson resume wise is apples and oranges, each has had a different focus in their lives.

As far as Conservatism Fred is pretty well established in that area. Issues, sure, always are because "Conservative" covers so many bases depending on exactly who one talks to. That's what I always find so interesting here, almost everyone who claims the corner market on Conservatism separates themselves by mere degrees, an issue or two here or there.

Whether Fred walks into the nomination (unlikely, though he may make it appear that way) or "earns it" he will get his shot at the big chair and if he makes a good President, his means of arrival will have little bearing on what he does after the first few months.

George Will's question has been answered, it obviously was necessary, the man was basically recruited. Obviously something was missing. Is Fred getting his "sea legs" sure, but he seems to be coming on pretty good this early on.

As far as Will's other points, they have been and will be answered again and again. Will there be stumbles, of course, just like any other candidate, but Fred's current recovery rate seems pretty good and will improve.

Good news. Fortunately, the individual state polls are heading in this same direction. It’s comforting to know that the real conservative is ahead of the socially liberal ex-mayor who has made a career out of politicizing 9/11.

And the beat goes on.

Being buffaloed by Hillary! into starting the race in January instead of September is going to be a fatal mistake for Giuliani, Romney and McCain.

Republicans should know, in their gut, that being strong and sticking to your principles is always the right thing to do. But these three chucked long-standing tradition and their game plans out the window to play "me too! me too!" at the first sign of adversity. Now they are going to pay the price.

My fearless prediction is that this thing is going to come down to a race between Thompson and Gingrich. Everybody in the race in January '07 will be gone by January '08.
