I am sure part of this is meant to instill a real (and well justified) fear in the Iranian people. They do not want another war, much less with the most powerful country in the history of mankind. The best possible outcome of this would be an overthrow of the Iranian government and the mullas by the Iranian people themselves rather than face an devestating attack. The liklihood of that, however, is probably slim to none.
