Avoiding Kids: How Men Cope With Being Cast as Predators
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 6, 2007 | JEFF ZASLOW

These days, if Rian Romoli accidentally bumps into a child, he quickly raises his hands above his shoulders. "I don't want to give even the slightest indication that any inadvertent touching occurred," says Mr. Romoli, an economist in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.

Ted Wallis, a doctor in Austin, Texas, recently came upon a lost child in tears in a mall. His first instinct was to help, but he feared people might consider him a predator. He walked away. "Being male," he explains, "I am guilty until proven innocent."

In San Diego, retiree Ralph Castro says he won't allow himself to be alone with a child -- even in an elevator.

Some years ago a friend of mine (a man) was working as a first grade teacher. It was not uncommon for some children to need assistance in the bathroom. Female teachers routinely accompanied both boys and girls to the bathroom. He was told if any of his class needed help he had to summon a female colleague. I am sure this sent an unspoken message to the children that men are not to be trusted. I personally would have found the situation extremely unpleasant and probably would not have worked in such an environment where I was an automatic suspect. But he really liked teaching that age group and suffered throught the suspicion and precautions.

“I wouldn’t hire a male sitter, unless he was a trusted family member.”

Typical feminazi leftist response.

Men Bad, Women Good. A moment's glance at that assumption tells us we overtrust women too much around children.

I am still a fan of the Thunderdome treatment myself. Helps keep the numbers down.

Well I didn’t say this.

I did say that I would advise my granddaughter that is she was in a situation where she needed stranger assistance, a scenario not all that likely nowadays what with cell phones and everything but IF...I tell her to seek out a female instead of a male.

The odds of either a stranger female or male being a criminal or sex pervert are probably slim, much in keeping with the population of this country, but the odds are much greater that a male would hurt her than a female.

Why do normally intelligent conservative males go bonkers at common sense stuff like this. These same conservative males would be jumping up and down pointing out that most unwed mothers are of a certain race or any other truth that we’ve been politically corrected into keeping our mouth shut about.

But you don’t want us to point out the truth about hey...most rapes are committed by the males in this society. Are you gonna argue with this? Or are you gonna call me sick or all kind of names as others on this thread have done? Aren’t you politically correcting and shutting us up?

I really don’t get it.

I do believe that most of the really intelligent men reading this article understand it and I’d bet they’d advise their own daughters the same way.

Why? Because it implies some underlying guilt? That wasn’t my intent.

I didn't think so, but it sort of implied it.

My intent was to indicate they want to do the right thing, i.e. stop at stop signs, pay taxes, etc. etc.

Of course they do. And the person with poor to zero impulse control may also "want to do the right thing," but fails.

I think what's needed here is to say "They do right thing."

We all (I hope) understand that nobody is 100% perfect all the time. My minister is definitely a man of God, but his driving record is not as clean as mine.

Not saying I approve of the situation but given the situation he was at least spared any greater suspicion or accusations.

Most crimes against children, against women and against men are committed by men. I’d even go out on a limb and suggest that even the gentle homosexual male will abuse a young boy if of that bent.

Even the Gentle homosexual? You live in a shell.

Evidently you don’t understand the notion of tongue in cheek.

It’s okay. We all can’t be as smart as me.

I don’t suppose the police would have thought to question why a small child was out that early? And where HIS parents were?

I feel for you.

A few years ago I was an assistant scoutmaster and part of our Council training team. Every adult leader was taught to never be alone with a scout who was not your own son. Even when we did scoutmaster conferences for rank advancement, we sat at a table with the scout in full view of others but just out of earshot, so the scout could have some small degree of privacy as we discussed his progress. This is a sad necessity to protect honest, upright, caring adults from even the appearance of impropriety, let alone false accusations.

Its one thing to tell our children to be watchful of dangerous people. Its another thing to tell them to fear ALL men. Yes, there are men who commit rapes. Men in general are brought up to respect women and to look after our kids' safety. So its not the facts we're arguing about, its the extreme fear of men being fostered in our society and that's can't be good for its well-being.

Based on what the MSM would have you think by their fair and balanced reporting *roll eyes*, I can see how someone could end up with that impression.

No need to over react.

Oh yeah, I also believe it takes marginally more effort in the short term to lead an honest life than a dishonest one. But that just may be me.

You get no argument here. It definitely takes more effort, and sometimes maybe more than marginal! Sometimes it means short-term losses (or even sometimes long-term losses), or advantages not taken.

But going strictly by the odds, isn’t it much more likely that she will be hurt by a family member than by a stranger? In times of crisis should children be directed then to strangers rather than someone inside the home?

I do think it is a difficult situation and one wants to err on the side of caution with children. But I think it would be wise to teach children how to spot suspicious behavior rather than to be suspicious of everyone.

And by your logic, since most gold-diggers, prostitutes, emotional abusers and spouse murderers have breasts, guess we should be looking at all of you the same way.

Just gotta play the odds, right? Only common sense.
