Juvenile male charged with unlawful voluntary sexual relations

A 17-year-old male was charged Wednesday in Ford County District Court with having unlawful voluntary sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl. The suspect is accused of having sex with the girl sometime Friday afternoon at a home on Lampton Circle in the Lazy Acres Trailer Park, according to a news release from the Ford County Sheriff's Office.

He was taken into custody Saturday morning and taken to the Southwest Kansas Juvenile Detention Center in Garden City, where he was being held until formal charges were filed.

The suspect was charged with unlawful sexual relations because he is younger than 19 and less than four years older than the alleged victim, according to Ford County Attorney John Sauer.

It was not immediately clear Wednesday afternoon whether the suspect was still in custody in Garden City.

The sheriff's office did not identify either the suspect or the alleged victim since both are minors.

Pre-marital teenage sex aside, does this smell like bad law or what? Two teenagers have consensual sex, they only have 2 years seperation in age and one is charged with a sex crime because he wasn't 4 years older?

Sounds like a nicer way of saying “Statutory Rape”

Shouldn’t they have charged both?

It's only bad law if you think children have some sort of right to have sex. If I were the 15-year-old girl's father, I'd be using either the law or a shotgun to get this guy away from my daughter.

If we had more laws like these, and more use of these existing laws, our culture might change, and we'd all be better off.

It is a bad law. I’m sure the girl’s parents want the boy punished but they also need to know it takes two to tango.

I think that we should change the statutory rape laws to allow a 2 or 3 year difference in age as a defense. It is ridiculous to call it “rape” when a teenage boy and girl who are close in age have sex. As the law is written, when it is applied to two teens close in age, it is a defacto law against teenage adultery or premarital sex. If you want that to be the law fine, but don’t hang a rape conviction on a boy with a girlfriend.

If I had a 15 year old daughter and walked in to find a 17 year old having sex with her the police or some law would be the least of his problems.

If he’d been 4 years older, they’d have charged him with rape.

It sounds like a law born of a legislative compromise between a ‘protect children’ faction holding to the fiction that sexually mature human beings who haven’t reached the age of majority are ‘children’ and a faction advocating sensible age-of-consent provisions like we have in Kansas (aoc 16, with a ‘Romeo and Juliette’ exception for age differences of 3 years or less, plus marriages as young as 14 with parental consent—and yes that last bit is a conservative position: most states used to have such a law).

Actually “unlawful voluntary relations” is the charge . . . so I guess they did make the decision to outlaw teenage sex.

If he was four years older than her he would be charged with statutory rape.

I am willing to bet money they certainly wouldn’t charge the girl.

In that case the father slaps his son on the back and says, that’s my boy.

This is further down the slippery slope of the “destroy the [evil] male” campaign in our society.

It’s going to get worse. Bet on it.

Just a thought, but why aren’t we arresting the boys/men that have impregnated all these teenage welfare mommas in the projects? Hmmm, I thought so.

Two teenagers have consensual sex

If she is able to give consent to a 17 year old, why can't she give consent to a 30 year-old?

Violation of equal protection. If he is charged then she should be also.

I don’t believe in punishing a young man and ruining his life because a man’s daughter won’t keep her legs together.
If this was consensual, charge the BOTH. How about that!
