Chirac's daughter caught in corruption probe
Claude Chirac, the daughter of former French president Jacques Chirac, is under investigation over allegations of corruption during her father's tenure as Paris mayor, judicial officials said.
A French judge has asked anti-fraud police to investigate her as part of a probe into an alleged party funding scam, they said.
The 44-year-old acted as communications adviser to her father at Paris City Hall.
Twenty people are under investigation in the case, in which members of the former president's Rally for the Republic (RPR) party are suspected of having received salaries from City Hall and private companies in the 1980s and 1990s.
According to the weekly news magazine Le Point, investigators are trying to establish why there was no record of Ms Claude having been employed by City Hall while working for her father between 1989 and 1993.
"The president's daughter appears to have had no contract with the city, nor to have been paid by it," the magazine said.
"It is precisely the informal nature of her duties that appears to have awakened the current suspicions.
"She had an office and a computer, took part in meetings, prepared trips but is not listed as a City Hall employee."
Ms Claude was employed at the time by a small private company, now defunct, it added.
She continued to advise her father throughout his 12-year presidency until he stood down in May.
An associate of Ms Chirac, who asked not to be named, said that she had not been informed of any judicial summons.
"She was never paid by Paris City Hall, so she can hardly be accused of illegal use of funds," the associate said.
The 74-year-old former president, who was Paris mayor from 1977 to 1995, is also expected to be questioned in connection with the case.
In July he was interviewed by magistrates as a witness in a related investigation over which his ally, former prime minister Alain Juppe, was convicted in 2004.

I remember them. They just retired recently.
The story about the Claude Chirac - Sarko romance is true, and very well known.
They were both married at the time, Sarko to wife #1 ( pre-Cecilia), Claude to some poor jerk who committed suicide.
One can never forget that these people are French, and they have a very different way of looking at marriage than we do.
