HERE we go again. As stu dents filed nervously into Brooklyn's Khalil Gibran International Academy yesterday, a key adviser to the school was defining the meaning of the loaded term jihad.
"Struggle," Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem, told me.
Say what? To most New Yorkers, including me, jihad means only one thing - holy war.
"And that's not my definition," the imam insisted. "That's a common definition - struggle on various levels."
What on earth are they teaching at this school?
One thing they don't seem to be teaching at Gibran Academy - the city's new Arabic-themed public school - is when to quit.

As for the definition of jihad, sorry imam raghead, I'm not buying your shuck.
any classes about tolerance?
Wow... the terrorists really have won.
Whatever happened to seperation of church and state? Oh yeah, that's only for CHRISTIANS.
This is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and the NYC tax payers are springing for the ALPO.
According to Islam, you cann't really know Arabic unless can cite the koran in it. Therefore you can't teach Arabic without teaching their religion.
"This is a tax funded madrassa, pure and simple."
Yes it is. Our own disgusting ignorance is going to kill us all.
Can’t be a religion of “peace” if its entire focus is on “Struggle”.
Can’t be both hot and cold. Can’t be both hard and soft. Can’t be both light and dark. Can’t be both peace and struggle.
Jihad as a peaceful struggle?
Yea right.
War is deception.
Jihad is war...violent, bloody, intolerant and hateful.
The evidence against the meaning of jihad as “peaceful struggle” are the dismembered body parts of those infidels and opposers of islam that are scattered throughout the streets in places like Iraq, Pakistan, India, the U.S. Dafur, Lebanon, Israel, ...
Instead of marching in the streets with an effort to discontinue this school, parents ought to be lining up knee deep with their kids, you know, their little Britney Spears wannabees and such. That will shut it down in a flash. BTW, what are the requirements for consideration to attend this school? Does one have to be of Arabic descent, etc.?
It absolutely is a tax=funded madrassa and it needs to be shut down immediatly.
Page 8 of the school’s Executive Summary clearly states that teacher workshops on islam will be given.
What more does anyone need to see?
There were many (I among them) who screamed loudly at our "afro-centric" schools where lies were taught as truth to inner city black children. They were given a bunch of gibberish as "history," taught made-up religion of "Kwanzaa" while being denied celebrating Christmas and Easter, shown dances and clothing supposedly worn by their ancestors in Africa.
People wonder why so many black kids drop out of school, get into trouble, have no respect for law, or even the lives of those around them -- blame those "afro-centric" centers of indoctrination where lies about white people, businesses, government and American life, were spoon fed daily.
Yeah, the shool will love that.
"That will shut it down in a flash."
It'll make the school more powerful, earning more taxpayer bucks to turn out terrorists.
What's hysterically funny is that everyone was so worried about the Dubai Ports deal, but there's no hoopla about a Madrassa in the city worst hit on 9/11. It's ok to let China control our ports, nobody cared, it's BAD to let an Arab country control them, but GOOD to have a school for terrorists funded by taxpayers...
Sometimes I think we deserve whatever we get.
Hitler had a “struggle” too and wrote about it in Mein Kampf.
Papers filed followed by doors permanently closed, preferably.
Seriously, I’d like to know to whom this school is restricted to, if there are any special dress codes, etc. If they want to be here in America, then they ought to be taught that EVERYONE must have a chance to attend.
I wonder if we Christians are strong enough to defend our faith in places such as these. Maybe we ought to start teaching our kids to go and fight in the public schools, for what we believe in. That would be a sight, doncha think, an act of rebellion by the youth against this hedonistic, Godless society. I’m dreamin again, sigh
Perhaps we need to remember that this is a school with a concentration in Arabic *language* and culture, not Islam.
In Arabic ‘jihad’ is the word for ‘struggle’. It means that outside of the theological context provided by the false teachings of Mohammed. If the word occurs in an Arabic text or conversation by an Arabic speaker, say discussing the difficulties in taking three inches off her waistline, where interpreting it as warfare against non-Muslims is absurd, translating it as ‘holy war’ or leaving it untranslated as ‘jihad’ is mistranslation, the word should be translated as ‘struggle’. Notice that I am *not* here propogating the lie told by Muslim apologists that it means ‘inner struggle’ when applied in a Muslim theological context. With the possible exception of the writings of *some* Sufi mystics (and Sufi is a vanishingly small minority within Islam, often persecuted by ‘orthodox’ Sunnis and Shi’ites alike) whenever ‘jihad’ is used in the context of Muslim theology or jurisprudence it means warfare against non-Muslims.
Before any of you Arab = Muslim racists chime in that ‘Arab culture is Islam’, I remind you THE SCHOOL IS NAMED FOR AN ARAB CHRISTIAN POET WHOSE WRITINGS ARE ANATHEMA TO MUSLIMS, that, despite imprudent immigration policies in recent years, most Arab-Americans are Christians, and, as pointed out by jveritas on another thread, the most recent Arabic literary revival was due almost entirely to Christians (and last I checked, literature is usually considered a major part of culture).
What did you expect them to call it, 'The New York Terror Training Madrassa of The Prophet Mohammed'?? Get serious, please.
Benign names are often used to camoflage insidious activity. For example, CAIR, (Council of American Islamic Relations), is named under the pretense of fostering American-Islamic understanding, but all they do is sue people, companies and agencies whom they claim are 'oppressing' muslims. Then there is the ACLU, that sweet sounding nomenclature that implies they work for the 'civil liberties' of Americans, yet they are nothing but communists, atheists and anarchists. They are ANTI-Americans with a pro-American name.
More to the point though, you cannot teach Arab culture and language without teaching about the birth, development and reign of Islam, which is both a religion and a culture, because Islam represents over 90% of the population of all Arab nations. Incorporated into the Arab 'culture', constitutions and governments of the Middle east is shari'a law, a religion based 'law' that governs most Arabs today. It is also a law, by the way, that seeks to destroy Judaism, Christianity and all else that opposes it. WAKE UP.
Because so very few books are written in arabic, they have to use ones which are 1,300 years old.
